Aaron McGruder Will NOT Be Involved In The Production Of The New Season Of ‘The Boondocks’

Aaron McGruder Will NOT Be Involved In The Production Of The New Season Of 'The Boondocks'

Those of you who are fans of the show will be happy to know – or already know – that the The Boondocks returns to the Cartoon Network’s late night Adult Swim programming block – for its 4th and final season – next month on April 21st.

However, you may not be so happy to know that the show’s creator, Aaron McGruder, will not be involved in the return of the award-winning animated series, produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Per the press release from the network, a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined. No other reasons were given. Although McGruder did vent some frustration with what he says was a “hijacking” of the Boondocks Facebook page, stating, on a March 16 post via the Facebook page of his upcoming new series Black Jesus:

Just found out someone has hijacked THE BOONDOCKS Facebook page. This was done without my permission and I have absolutely no control over the content being posted as of Friday, March 14.

And it doesn’t appear that the situation has been resolved, with his last update, posted on March 20, just last week, stating:

Day Six. Page still hijacked. Black Jesus says I have my integrity and the love of God, but fuck that I want my page back.

No commentary from the Cartoon Network or Adult Swim about the matter, and whether McGruder’s lack of involvement in the return of The Boondocks has anything to do with it.

According to the press release, the new season follows Huey, Riley and Granddad who meet several new and familiar characters in outrageous situations. Some of the characters include a long lost Kardashian sister that Granddad is dating; Tom DuBois as R&B bad boy “Pretty Boy Flizzy’s” lawyer, and Graddad’s love relationship with his iPhone’s Siri.

Read more from the press release below for full details:

In The Boondocks, Robert “Granddad” Freeman (John Witherspoon, Friday After Next) is the cantankerous legal guardian of his rambunctious grandkids Huey and Riley (Regina King-Southland and Ray) and has moved them from the south side of Chicago to the quiet and safety of “The Boondocks” (in this case, suburban Woodcrest), hoping that he can ignore them altogether and enjoy the golden years of his life in peace. But Huey, a 10-year-old left wing revolutionary, is determined not to enjoy the affluence of suburbia. This attitude is seconded by his 8-year-old brother, Riley, a proud product of contemporary rap culture. Although they torture each other and provoke the neighborhood, they are no match for Granddad, who is eccentric even by “crazy-ass-old-black-man” standards. Gary Anthony Williams (Boston Legal) as Uncle Ruckus, Gabby Soleil (Johnson Family Vacation) as Jazmine Dubois and Jill Talley (Camp Lazlo) as Sarah Dubois round out the cast, with Cedric Yarbrough (Reno 911!) returning as the voice of fan favorite Colonel H. Stinkmeaner in addition to Tom Dubois.

The new season finds Huey, Riley and Granddad encountering a roster of characters, both new and familiar, in uproarious situations, including Granddad’s dating a long lost Kardashian sister; their friend Tom DuBois acting as R&B bad boy “Pretty Boy Flizzy’s” lawyer in exchange for relationship advice; Granddad’s love affair with Siri on his new iPhone; and the Freemans’ foray into the lethal black market of the hair-care industry à la “Breaking Bad.” Throughout the final season, an eclectic mix of hip-hop artists, actors, comedians and media personalities will voice guest characters on the series, including Jenifer Lewis (Think Like a Man), Dennis Haysbert (24), Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Ghostface Killah, CeeLo, Lil Wayne, Donald Faison (Scrubs), Aisha Tyler (Balls of Fury), Kym Whitley (Reno 911!), Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris), Mo’Nique (The Parkers), Marion Ross (Happy Days), Tavis Smiley, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Bill Duke (X-Men: The Last Stand), and Cedric the Entertainer (Talk to Me). Reprising their guest roles from last season are Xzibit, Charlie Murphy, MTV’s Sway and Katt Williams, among others.

Boondocks Episodes

No Aaron? I planned the whole night for this.. thanks for the heads up, i'll still check it out though

knotty Natural

There can be no boondocks without McGruder

Seems like some sort of l0w-key reprisal to me. In truth, he signed his death certificate in the business in his own blood with the BET and Tyler Perry takedowns. They were funny, but the truth is whether we like it or not TP in particular has a whole lot more power because he generates a whole lot more money. (I'm not a fan really, but it is what it is.) I think him ruffling the wrong feathers is behind this whole thing … Everything went off the rails with that show after that episode.

Methinks this article cld use a little more investigation into what's going on behind the scenes. Who's running the show? Mcgruder was semi-ranting online abt apparently being locked out of the boondocks fB page… yet haven't seen any talk of legal actions for not being involved with the show… did he just cash out? And why is he working on that other new show if too busy to put time into his signature 15yr old franchise?

Aaron Macgruder was always crappy at sticking to his deadlines so it is no surprise they booted him off his own show because of this, I gave up on the show midway season 3

I will still give it a chance, but the kardashian thing did put me off. I don't think Aaron would've put that type of pop culture in the show, makes me think that episode stinks already

Power 2The People

This is the last season. :-(

They ran him off his OWN show? How the hell do they do that? So who running this thing? A bunch a white people with no connection to the black community no doubt. How will the satire on the black community be executed without the original black creator? Even if they had black people running the show, for all we know they're sellouts. This might also explain why there are a load of celebrity supporting characters, to gloss over any commentary they can't deliever.

Hmm.. I'll watch of course and hope it's as good as previous seasons. But if McGruder was somehow forced out of a show he created I won't be buying the DVD.
