Peafur Productions and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh team to produce “Unstable”

Peafur Productions and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh team to produce "Unstable"

Productions and Surfer Jack Productions announced today at EU Media’s Cartoon Movie a new 2-D animated theatrical
Unstable, which will be moving
into development with the star studded animation team of Jeff ‘Swampy’ Marsh (Phineas & Ferb), David Freedman (Groove High) and top BBC Comedy Producer, Gareth Edwards (Mitchell & Webb). The
three have been looking for the right project to collaborate on since they all
worked on the adult animated animated series The Mr. Hell Show (BBC2 and
Showtime) back in 2000.

Via their press release:

Swampy is
set to direct the piece alongside Freedman who will also co-write the script
with Edwards.  Top designers Pascal
Campion (Peabody & Sherman) and Margaux Zinsner have devised the look, and Swampy has devised a pipeline that keeps costs low, but the comedy high.
Says Marsh, “It’s a compelling story. Just like Phineas & Ferb, its going
to work for kids and adults as well, and the more time we spend on the storyboards,
the funnier it gets. We’ve already scheduled a long fun time on storyboard,
complete with testing. There’s no need to spend 100 million unless your goal is
simply to create wild spectacle, or to waste 90 million.”

Freedman, “Unstable is a character based film, with acres of action, but we
realized if we go CG we had two risky choices; develop with a big studio and
risk that it never actually gets made, or go cheap and plastic and disappoint
everyone and never get hired again. But with a sharp, emotional, and very funny
film with some household names doing voices 2D can still deliver with the
warmth of a hug.”

“Unstable” is
an action packed heist film, which centers on a police horse framed for a crime
he didn’t commit. Says Edwards, “I’d like to think of it as Witness meets
Oceans 11 bumps into Madagascar. It’s about the power of family, even if that
family isn’t related to you. I think everyone has family they chose who
can be as special to them as the family they’re given.”

Marsh sums
up, “There’s a very strong emotional core to Unstable, plus as the title
suggests, we get to romp around with crazy characters. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry,
and of course, you’ll sing along. Oh yes. There will be songs! The opportunity
to do comedy with Dave and Gareth again was something that I was truly excited
about, but it’s the characters they created that really drove me to be involved
with this project. They’re all so full, complex and surprising and lend
themselves perfectly to the kind of storytelling I enjoy.”

From what I understand, there is a lot more of Phineas & Ferb to come but long-term, what Swampy may be doing down the road looks very inspiring.

Freedman added, “Our look is a lo-fi reinvention of the classic films we grew up on like 101 Dalmations and Jungle Book. We’re making something inventive and very funny with a style that will still play at the local shopping mall.”
