While most people try to avoid drama in their day-to-day lives, TNT has always thrived in it. Now the network claims to have the most scripted dramas ever for a basic cable network with their summer rollout of nine shows: three new programs, six returning, and one unscripted series. TNT announced premiere dates today for six of these shows in addition to the already released dates for the remaining four.
Enough with the math — let’s get to the shows. TNT’s summer season begins June 9th at 9 pm with the season three premiere of “Major Crimes,” starring Mary McDonnell. “Murder in the First,” the new series starring Taye Diggs and Kathleen Robertson about a pair of homicide detectives (what else?) will follow it. The fifth season of “Rizzoli & Isles” hits on June 17th at 9 pm with the third season of Eric McCormack’s mind-bending drama “Perception” right after. The real-life investigation series “Cold Justice” starts its second season June 20th at 8 pm. TNT’s new series starring Eric Dane (“Grey’s Anatomy”) debuts on Sunday, June 22nd at 9 pm. The end-of-the-world drama set on a battleship screened its first episode at SXSW earlier this week. “Falling Skies” will start its fourth season at 10 pm the same night.
The next batch of shows won’t begin until August 18th when “Dallas,” the sexed-up sequel to CBS’ original currently airing new episodes, returns for its summer run. “Legends” will then premiere August 20th. Featuring Sean Bean and from “Homeland” executive producers Howard Gordon and Alexander Cary, “Legends” has the pedigree to be TNT’s next big thing. It’s based on a novel by Robert Littell about an undercover agent working for the FBI who specializes in changing identities. It’s still a long way off, but color me intrigued with the casting of the always enjoyable Bean and a “Bourne”-esque storyline.
Somewhat remarkably, the premiere of “Legends” will be followed up by the fourth season premiere — fourth! — of “Franklin & Bash.” TNT’s second buddy drama with an “&” in the title has made it through three seasons with relatively good ratings, and stars Mark Paul Gosselaar and Breckin Meyer are looking to hit their 40th episode this season.
