Some quickie TV casting news…
First, Mike Epps has joined the cast of the upcoming second season of BET’s Being Mary Jane, which stars Gabrielle Union. Epps will play a family man named Chris Warren, a husband and father in a great marriage – one that Mary Jane envies.
Second, Angela Bassett will indeed return for the next season of FX’s American Horror Story, which will be titled Freak Show. Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the USA. Her group of freak show performers include Bassett along with returning stars, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Frances Conroy – all acts whom Lange’s character has rescued, and who will do anything to make sure that their business sticks around.
Third, Andre Royo has joined the cast of Amazon.com’s hour-long drama pilot Hand of God, from Burn Notice Executive Producer Ben Watkins, which centers on the powerful Judge Harris Pernell (Ron Perlman), a hard-living, law-bending married man with a high-end call girl on the side who has a religious awakening and starts hearing voices that could be God speaking to him. Royo will play the series-regular role of Bobo, the local mayor and Pernell’s best friend.
Fourth, across the pond, Zawe Ashton has landed a role in the second season of the British TV network Sky Arts series Psychobitches, co-written by The League of Gentlemen’s Jeremy Dyson, which stars Rebecca Front as the unnamed therapist trying to get to the bottom of the deep-seated issues in the lives of various famous women.
No word on what role exactly Ashton has signed up to play, but she joins an all-female starring cast that includes Sam Spiro, Sharon Horgan, Sheila Reid, Selina Griffiths, Frances Barber, Katy Brand, Doon Mackichan, and Michelle Gomez.
The six-part series will debut in the fall.
And finally, Chris Williams has joined the cast of NBC’s comedy pilot One Big Happy which revolves around two childhood friends – a lesbian played by Elisha Cuthbert, and her straight male best friend, played by Nick Zano – who have been living together for some time, while trying to have a baby via artificial insemination. They finally get pregnant, just as the man meets and impulsively marries the love of his life, played by Kelly Brook.
Chris Williams has signed up to play a character named Roy, who’s described as a former college football player, now married, who misses the freedom of his single lifestyle.
