‘Veronica Mars’ Sequel A Possibility As Film Earns $2 Million, Rob Thomas Pens Open Letter Over Faulty Digital Copies

‘Veronica Mars’ Sequel A Possibility As Film Earns $2 Million, Rob Thomas Pens Open Letter Over Faulty Digital Copies

Those eager to return to Neptune, California finally earned the chance this past weekend, as Warner Bros.’ crowd-funded “Veronica Mars” movie landed on both VOD and 291 screens. Or so they thought: the continuation of the Kristen Bell sleuth series was always going to be scrutinized because of its controversial Kickstarter origins, but following a slow theatrical weekend take and many backers left without a working digital copy, some needed reassurance has come courtesy of the show’s creator.

While earning a place in the weekend Top 10, “Veronica Mars” ended up only making $2.02 million at the box office upon its release—still a distance away from the film’s $5.7 million budget. The fact that a large section of its audience already paid for a ticket via Kickstarter—those who donated $35 or more—is a logical conclusion for those numbers. However, the increasingly vital VOD take may hold a success story in wait, and Warner Bros. already seems pleased with the response thus far.

“Our result starting with our Thursday fan events was $260K. You add that together with our weekend for a total of $2 million from 291 theaters? That’s pretty significant,” said Jeff Goldstein, VP of theatrical distribution at Warner Bros. (via EW) “We recognize going forward that there’s room in the marketplace for huge movies, medium movies, and boutique films for a very specific audience.”

Goldstein said “in a week’s time” they’ll have a better sense—not only as to the final tally for the film, but also plans for a sequel, a conversation that he and series creator Rob Thomas haven’t had just yet. “We wanted to get through this weekend and then sit down and figure out where we’re going.”

Unfortunately, goodwill among the show’s core audience dropped somewhat when it came to their much-anticipated reward. Though Warner Bros. issued digital copies of the film to Kickstarter backers via the streaming site Flixster, a host of connectivity issues and server problems with the service left many less than impressed. In response, Thomas published an open letter to fans with his wishes for the film’s release to “be perfect for all of you,” and to seek customer support if problems plagued their experience.

“If you paid for a copy of the movie a year ago, we don’t want you to have less choice and freedom than people who decide to buy it today. And we definitely don’t want you to end up paying twice just to see the movie on your preferred service,” he said.

Warner Bros. issued a similar statement offering to refund backers for the price of the film on a different streaming or download service—making it clear they want their positive experiment to stay that way. But for those who made an effort to catch “Veronica Mars” this past weekend: did you succeed, and in what format? Let us know in the comments below. [Engadget/HitFix]

This tv series is extraordinary’ I love a good mystery and Veronica certainly had her share. I am wondering why a new series with her as a smart fBI agent wouldn’t be a good idea; seems like a no-brainer to me! But I am hoping for a sequel to the movie too.

I had to wait to but the movie on blue ray since it was not showing at any theater near where I used to live I own all three seasons of the show I am a huge fan. I am hoping a sequel to the movie comes out. I will truly be there to buy it on blue ray and watch it in theaters if I am able to. I wish they would let us know what happen to her while she was in the FBI and why she left it.

I don't really understand why this series cannot continue, starting where the movie left off?! This show has everything an audience wants, Kristin Bells whitty humor (and humor overall), an epic love story between "Logan" (whose character needs to remain the same) and "Veronica", crime and crime solving. This needs to be on TV! If you had enough fans to fund a movie, the show will succeed.

I would have donated to the Kickstarter campaign had I known about it at the time. I LOVE the movie and LOVE the series and especially LOVE the LoVe relationship. I agree with a previous poster, Logan has matured all the passion and intensity is there still simmering below the surface. I have the three seasons, will get the digital movie soon, and have just finished the first book. It's not enough! A Netflix backed series would put me over the moon along with a movie. I can't get enough and would be thrilled with more adult content for the cases needing to be solved. The show needs to grow with it's characters. Thank you to everyone that helped bring this movie to light!!

This Is by far is my favorite movie. Veronica mars is so addicting and I've watched the show so many times. The movie was just perfect except I would love to see more of Logan and Veronica together. I hate it when they break up, but I love their passion for each other and when they get back together it's just awesome. They belong together! I would love to see more movies or even bring back the show! I'm going to buy this movie and watch it over just like I do the series. Please think bout bringing the show back or making a new movie!!

I loved it but next time please do more than one take. The stars were definitely not up to their usual best the acting was dull. I suspect this was due to the hurried nature trying to save a few bucks. Next time shoot for the whole ten million needed. And for those of you that think it was poorly budgeted, movies cost. A lot. Also, I LOVE VERONICA MARS, and I'd like to see more romance between Logan and Veronica. We waited for it. Not enough Logan. And we like him passionately unrepentantly himself. Despite Veronica. The tension between them is why they work. But don't break them up again. Just have them fight.Thx.

I just watched it and loved it!!! I really hope you's make another movie or better yet make another season it is by far my favourite series every!! And I know a lot of my friends would also be happy if you's made another season. please please please I would be over the moon if you's did :) plus there is heaps of different ways you can go with this like all different situations and what happens with Veronica and Logan. I really do love this show/movie :)

I hope their is a sequel and i would like to see them develop veronica and logans relationship more

Bought movie on DVD LOVED IT!!!! I wish the show would come back but would be excited to see a sequel. My friends and I love Veronica!

I love the show! The movie was EPIC. Could not have asked for a better film. I really hope there is as equal, show me where to donate and I will. I've loved the show since I was younger and I still love it now.

Was so happy this was showing in a cinema close enough to where I live in the UK, really enjoyed seeing it on the big screen and plan to purchase it on iTunes as well, so excited that there's a mention of a potential sequel :)

i was a backer and received my digital copy at 00:04 on release date meaning i was watching it at home less than five minutes from the release. it was amazing!!!

I brought my version through iTunes, Really Good quality
I love the Veronica Mars movie , I have Watched Like 10 times already,
I REally hope they do a sequel, Their are so many more stories they can do
i really wished they showed it in theatres over here in australia :(
P.s. i loved the tv show as well :)xx

Watched it via Flixter on my Macbook, which worked like a charm.
It's a shame there were issues with the UV/Flixter experience. No complaints on my end. Everything worked swimmingly.

Ordered it from Amazon Prime for £6.99 for 48 hrs in the UK. Already watched it twice and going to watch it once more before the time runs out. I am seriously already hungry for more! LoVe just slays me. Kristen Bell is magnetic, electric, vulnerable, loveable, strong, confident, witty and she is the BEST female lead that has been on TV and now this movie. (Barring Buffy who comes a close second IMO) And Jason Dohring well…. Logan has grown, matured, there's a quieter intensity to him and the chemistry is still bubbling and sizzling away. I don't think I could have reeeally hoped for a better film and I really hope this "boutique movie" thing catches on so we get a sequel. And one which is hopefully set after Logan's 180 days away!!

VOD – worked like a charm. (all three times..)

I watched it Saturday night on my mac laptop via Flixster and UltraViolet. The only issue I had was some difficulty setting up an account with UltraViolet but in the end, I got it to work. Great movie and I hope they make more.

Went to the theater AND bought off Amazon!

Tracy Grierson

I enjoyed the movie a lot! Watched it on my ps4 with no problems. Hope you do invest in a sequel!!! Recently watched the whole series before the movie & thought it was great!!

iTunes! US Store verison, but in India since you couldn't buy it on the Indian store and its not releasing in theater here.
Loved it, would love another one, ordering the book right now! :)

I am a Kickstarter backer and I had no issues with my digital copy, and saw it in the theater on Friday with a sold out audience of marshmallows (pre-ordered on Feb 14). The movie was great. I didn't know other backers had problems. I also pre-ordered the book. I also plan on going to the theater at least one more time.

Discovered VM as I flupped channels on soap net maybe 2 weeks before saop net went off air. Dissapointed to see it go wanted to see more VM. Through tweeter found out about the movie to late to be a kickstarter backer or I would have. Rented it on Dish the Friday it was out. Still havnt watched all episodes of the first three seasons. Working on it now that its on Dish the pivot channel. Wish they would show it more. Love the episodes ive seen. The movie was great! I so wish it would be picked up for a new series on t.v..

I rented it on iTunes. Was worth it.

As a Kickstarter backer I received my digital copy with minimal issues. I did decide I didn't care for the Flixster app and opted to purchase the movie on iTuned as well. Not to mention I drove about 120 miles to see the film at a fan event on Thursday before the release. I would gladly do it all again. I also preordered the book and cannot wait to read it. Go Veronica Mars and all the awesome Marshmellows who made it happen!

I've bought a copy from iTunes and supported it at kickstarter.
Would like to see at movie but no lucky here in Brazil.

I saw the film in theaters on opening day. I pledged for both digital and physical copies of the film, but have not yet seen it in a home video context.

Got my uv copy and script as a backer. Paid to see it at the cinema in the UK, and will again before it's taken off. Film was great and if necessary I'll contribute to the sequel too.

Bought mine on iTunes. No problems at all. Loved it!

I was a backer, but wasn't going to miss seeing the movie on the big screen. So on the release day I saw it in theaters, and hour and a half away from my home, and the next day I watched in on Flixster no problem.

My local theaters decided to show movies that were already out on DVD instead of Veronica Mars, so I did not get to see it yet. I will look into watching it on demand. I kicked in my $25 to make the movie, so I will definitely see it soon.

Watched on direct tv
No problems
Loved the movie. So glad for closure but hope for sequel. I didn't know fans helped fund movie. If I had I would have spent $35.

I watched for free on some shady movie site. Good thing too. It sucked.

I bought the movie on Amazon Friday and watched it without any problems. Loved it!! I hope they make another or a network picks up the show. Would love to see Veronica Mars return to tv.

We live 25 miles from any AMC theater so we were hoping to watch it via VOD the opening weekend… unfortunately Comcast only offered it for purchase, not as a rental. We were willing to rent it for $4.99 but we did not want to pop for the $17.99 (I think) purchase price. When it comes out via Comcast as a rental at a later date (we hope) we will definitely rent it but we had to sit it out the opening weekend… which was a disapointment.

What a poorly researched article. A $2 million start on less than 300 screens is outstanding. And the film has been number 1 on iTunes in Australia since release. I hear that iTunes numbers for the US are almost on par. Those VOD numbers are critical when determining the success of this film yet you have largely ignored their significance.

Steve Price

Watched it 3 times in a 24 hour rental on M-GO. Thoroughly enjoyed the film and look forward to a sequel.

The movie was great. I hope it continues to do strong business this week. I would have seen it in theaters, but it just wasn't anywhere near me. So I rented it from amazon. I'll buy it when they put it out on blu ray (don't much care for "buying" digital copies of things).

The film we got was already more than we might have expected seven years on from the cancellation of the show, and it did offer some much needed closure, but that doesn't stop me from wanting a sequel. A further continuation of the series would be fantastic. And hey, maybe next time they could put it in a theater that's within an hour of where I am.

My daughter and I saw it at the movies, purchasing today on amazon prime and will be purchasing the DVD. We loved it! What about returning the series via Netflix? We became fans after the show was off
the air.. My daughter found it on soapnet .. Bring it back!

Really enjoyed the movie. I've enjoyed watching the show on Amazon Prime with my teenage son these last few weeks. Was thrilled that my city was one of the 291 to get the film. In the sequel, please get Logan some anger management therapy.

Just watched it on amazon prime. Wow. I was a fan of the show and was impressed with how they summerized Veronica's life in the beginning; including her relationships with her friends and Logan.

It think this movie was exactly what we could have hoped for. We got to see her life after leaving and how much and little she has changed. We got to see Logan and veronica being pulled back together and it felt like the same chemistry between those two characters, like no time has past..
The movie was a great balance of seeing old characters and giving the fans answers to questions we have longed for. I can see the possibility of a sequel. But if there isn't, there was enough of a resolution in the storyline. But if there is a sequel. We better see more veronica and Logan :)

Loved it, been a Veronica Mars fan for years, even turned my kids n Hubby into fans. Looking forward to finding out if Ronni helps clean up Neptune and investigate murder of Saxs n how relationship turns out with Logan. Iced currently watched 4x now n have until 8-6 due to Vod with Dish, paid 6.99 for 6months. I can dig it.

Saw it in the theater. Need a sequel involving the murder of Deputy Sacks. Was Sheriff Lamb the sole person behind it or was there someone bigger? And so happy over Veronica and Logan rekindling their relationship.

I am seeing it tomorrow night with a couple gal pals…and we are driving 80 miles to Austin just to see it on the big screen!!

Saw it at the movie theatre. It was great! Us Marshmallow's want a sequel. :)

I watched it on Dish on Demand. I will be buying it on DVD as well. I wanted to see it in the theater, but, unfortunately it isn't playing anywhere near my home. I want more!!

Please make a sequel!!!!!

I watched it on iTunes on my iPad. First movie on my iPad. LOVED IT!!! Really hope there's a sequel!!

I ordered it off charter on demand. I loved it and think be awesome for another one! Superexcited see movie come oout wish show was more than three seasons!

Veronica(No, Really!)

I saw it for free on Wedneday at a Pre-Showing, Thursday at a Fen Event, Friday evening, Sunday evening, and I will be seeing it again Wednesday evening. I am a backer and I still haven't watched it streaming yet. I backed enough to get a DVD but I also pre-ordered the blu-ray and the first book! I would have done nothing but go to screening after screening all day since then opening, but my time and budget is limited.

I watched it on AMAZON PRIME 3 times this weekend. I didn't have a problem at all. I think I may rent it again next weekend too.

Lisa R

Smiled it all the way through. Happy to see all the characters and enjoyed the inside jokes. It was only in one theater near us. I don't think another movie is needed, but I would go!

Watched it on bt on demand in the uk I paid even though I had a digital copy because I wanted to add to numbers. Loved it and all the little extra lines for marshmallows; I think leo's fbi one was the best.

Had a hard time at first finding it in the theater…Found it on sunday night and went Monday. It was amazing! I hope they make another one.

Saw it on Thursday at a fan event, then Friday in the theater and watched my digital copy once so far. Amazing!!! Hoping for a sequel. Cannot wait for the book!

I LoVed the movie i hope there is another i want to see logan come back from the Navy i want to see them happy, more than they already have. <3

Seen it Loved it hope ther s a part two

Billy Suratt

No problems watching on Vudu. Great movie, and well worth the wait.

Many backers are making a mountain out of a molehill. Register for awful flixter. Link to ultra violet. Link to vudu. Watch the movie in 1080p on any television or bluray player made in the last 5 years. Could it be easier? Yes. Was it a disaster? No. This wonderful experience is being tainted because a lot of people lack basic technological understanding.

I thought the movie was great. The snarkiness I missed so much was there!! I loved how even the minor characters kept popping up…Clint, Vinnie, Madison…and bring their "charms" back.
As for viewing, I rented it on Google Play for my Android tablet without any problems. The $5.99+tax to rent was TOTALLY worth it considering I would have had to drive over 3 hours to get to the nearest theater showing it then pay another $15-20 to watch it. I watched it 3 times in 24 hours, made sure to get my money's worthm but wished I'd just bought it outright.

I loved the movie except it seemed rushed. There didn't seem to be as much suspense or growth. Also, the storyline about the corruption of the police wasn't given as much attention as it probably should have been. It just seemed like there was a lot going on and not a whole lot of consideration and attention given to each story. That being said, I plan on re-watching my favorite scenes later on and hope for a better sequel.

I backed this movie and had the VOD code on Friday but so glad I went and saw it on the big screen. I really hope they get a sequel as Veronica is such a strong, female role model to counterbalance the pathetic Bella Swan who faints when she's kissed!

While it was a good movie…….I found it way to predictable for a murder mystery. Right when they introduced the character I knew right away by how the person acted and Still felt like it was just one long episode tau could've been free and paid for by commercials lol

Saw it this weekend, loved it! going back today with other non VM fans. Taking my nieces this weekend. They were too young to watch the series, and after just the trailer they are all in! We Mashmallows need to educate those who never caught it, and that they do not need to know the shop, to love the movie!

I bought it VOD through Comcast. Seen it 3 times already and LoVed it! Looking forward to a sequel!

I took my daughters and a friend of theirs to see the movie. We drove 3 hours to get to see the movie, and then drove home after. I loved it and so did they! We are ready for more VMars! I also got my TM to go see it this week. I have preordered the BluRay, ordered it on VOD as well. I even preordered the first book as well. We are definitely Marshmallows in this house! Haha!

Np problem on Itunes

Mike M

I went and saw it in the theater and then bought a VoD copy from iTunes. I'm planning on making another trip to the theater in the next couple of days. VM fans, if you can, you should do the same! Let's manipulate those box office totals :p

I saw it at the movie with my husband and purchased it on VOD which I watched again yesterday. I had to rewind it and watch several scenes more than once. I really want a sequel too.

I loved the movie. I watched it twice in theaters (recruiting non Veronica Mars fan co-workers, and also a Meetup group), and then bought it on VOD, even though I have the dvd coming (and the Flixter option) for being a Kickstarter donor. I'm doing my part, because I REALLY want another movie. :)

Warner Bros IS NOT refunding amounts on other platforms. They are rejecting all requests for refunds. Proof of purchase will be returned with a "SOLUTION REJECTED" subject line. The only options are eventually getting Flixster to work or a $10 refund. If the Flixster code has been redeemed, the $10 refund does not appear available, either. They apparently will only help those with redeemed codes in getting Flixster to work.

I was lucky to have a nearby AMC to see the movie on Saturday. Then came home and bought it on VOD. I am ready for a sequel!

You need the weekend numbers from the VOD before any decision is made for a small film. That is basic in the industry. It no longer runs on box office earnings. Thought, per theater, which is what they look at for small films, is very high. That is a good sign. Not to mention how well the On Demand numbers for the series itself are doing. These all will factor in. It is not as simple as a small weekend BO and a few streaming tech issues.

Loved the movie! We were lucky to have it playing at a nearby AMC so saw it on Saturday; the first show we went to was sold out. I hope it continues to do well next week and gets a sequel!

Loved this movie so much!! The hubby and I went to see it in theatres and loved it so much we purchased the VOD as soon as we got home and watched it again!! Keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel.

Julia Morden

love love loved the movie -can't wait for more …the movie was sold well to the marshmallows but not to new possible viewers …bummer about digital situation but the movie was perfect ….thank you folks and Rob T.

EXCELLENT movie! Do not miss it on the big screen before it is out of theaters! The screen and sound at the theater make this movie even better!

I had no problems at all redeeming my code on Flixster. I live in the boonies and have the very slowest DSL speed and no problems whatsoever getting it up and running and no buffering, drops or quality degradation with the streaming.

The per-screen take was strong, so I'm not surprised WB seems pleased with this.

The movie is like a two-part episode of the TV show, and that's a GOOD thing. I'm sure fans are very happy and I hope there will be a sequel. I've also pre-ordered the book, The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, that's coming out next week and picks up where the movie leaves off.

I watched the movie Friday night at home on Flixster. I had no problems at all redeeming my code. I loved the movie, and am looking forward to my DVD arriving soon to watch special features. I may go see it on the big screen, too, but lets face it- when this show was on the air I watched it on a 19" screen. Now I have a 50" HD TV. So it was already like seeing it on the big screen. If they do a sequel, I am there.

what's it matter to WB if the film makes back it's $5 Million budget? They didn't pay for it. As far as WB is concerned they just made $2 Million dollars for a movie they didn't want to finance.
