2014 Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Actress

2014 Emmy Predictions: Best Drama Actress

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions through August 25th, when the winners will be announced.

Well, Lizzy Caplan made it into the race — now, can she do some damage? Robin Wright and Juliana Marguiles are the veterans of the group the Television Academy loves to reward, and the two could end up squaring off for the top prize. Kerry Washington shouldn’t be ignored, and Claire Danes would need some late-emerging love for "Homeland" to take home the Emmy. Michelle Dockery, meanwhile, could play the spoiler if all the love "Downton Abbey" saw on nominations day translates to wins.

Below are predictions for best drama actress from both Indiewire Awards Editor Peter Knegt and Assistant TV Editor Ben Travers. Check out predictions in all the categories here.

The nominees:
Lizzy Caplan, "Masters of Sex"
Claire Danes, "Homeland"
Michelle Dockery, "Downton Abbey"
Julianna Marguiles, "The Good Wife"
Kerry Washington, "Scandal"
Robin Wright, "House of Cards"

Ben’s predictions:
Will win: Robin Wright, "House of Cards"
Could win: Julianna Marguiles, "The Good Wife"
Should win: Robin Wright, "House of Cards"
Shoulda been here: Keri Russell, "The Americans"

Peter’s predictions:
Will win: Robin Wright, "House of Cards"
Could win: Kerry Washington, "Scandal"
Should win: Lizzy Caplan, "Masters of Sex"
Shoulda been here: Tatiana Maslany, "Orphan Black"

Robin was robbed.

Sandra Oh, Grey’s Anatomy. 10 years of consistently solid acting.

Lizzie Caplin is far superior to her competition she is the person you remember from this excellent show

How does the academy manage to overlook KERI RUSSELL??? I don’t understand how The Americans gets no attention at all!

I will never stop rooting for Claire Danes…

I've got an interesting slate here:

1) Robin Wright – House of Cards
2) Juliana Margulies – The Good Wife
3) Claire Danes – Homeland
4) Tatiana Maslany – Orphan Black
5) Keri Russell – The Americans
6) Lizzy Caplan – Masters of Sex
7) Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men

I think there will be seven nominees again this year, with the TV Academy overlooking the much overrated Kerry Washington while recognizing both Keri Russell and Lizzy Caplan. If there are only six, I expect Elisabeth Moss to be left out.

My predictions for nominees (in no particular order):
Claire Danes, Homeland
Vera Farmiga, Bates Motel
Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Kerry Washington, Scandal
Robin Wright, House of Cards

Who will win: Claire Danes (Homeland)
Who could win: Robin Wright (House of Cards)
Who should win: Robin Wright (House of Cards)
Who should be here: Keri Russell (The Americans) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey)

I Love Downton, But...

…I don't think Michelle Dockery should be nominated this time around. It's sad, really-I've always supported her nomination and believed she should have won for season two, but she just wasn't great last year (to be fair, Julian Fellowes didn't give her much to work with).

However, I don't think that means no one from Downton should get nominated; if anything, this should be the year Laura Carmichael gets the nomination she's deserved for a long time as Lady Edith. I know it's a long shot, but fingers crossed!

My predictions:
1) Claire Danes (Homeland)
2) Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
3) Robin Wright (House of Cards)
4) Kerry Washington (Scandal)
5) Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey)
6) Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)

Who I Would like to see on this List is Madeleine Stowe (Revenge) she was amazing this year compared to most other actors on Revenge. But her acting is unique. I Would also like to see someone from OUAT there, however it seems only the same people get a nomination every year

1- Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) 1st choice
2- Claire Danes (Homeland)
3- Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) 2nd choice
4- Robin Wright (House Of Cards)
5- Kerry Washington (Scandal) too overrated!
6- Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel)

in a perfect world
1- Tatiana Maslany
2- Julianna Margulies
3- Claire Danes
4- Keri Russell
5- Mireille Enos
6- Vera Farmiga
7- Elisabeth Moss or Lizzy Caplan (Last year were 7 actress nominated)

stop the Mariska thing, it's never gonna happen. Sorry folks!

Philippe's predictions:
1. Robin Wright, House of Cards
2. Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex
3. Mireille Enos, The Killing
4. Claire Danes, Homeland
5. Vera Farmiga, Bates Motel
6. Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

In a Perfect World
Mireille Enos, The Killing

First of all, I am a television critic. I have watched all the shows this year and believe I know who will get nominated, hopefully.

The number characterizes the winner to last-place.

1) Claire Danes, Homeland (Sorry folks, she is amazing.)
2) Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: SVU (Downright amazing, hands down spoiler.)
3) Vera Farmiga, Bates Motel (Believe it or not, Farmiga deserves a win.)
4) Robin Wright, House of Cars (She was way better now than last year)
5) Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black (She deserved a nomination last year, perhaps a win, too.)
6) Keri Russell, The Americans (Have you ever missed an episode? This woman is tough!)

But, if there are spoils, then the following, anyone, can steal it.

Julianna Marguilies, The Good Wife (One of her bests.)
Elizabeth Moss, Mad Men (As much as I hated the show this year, she was dazzling.)
Kerry Washington, Scandal (She may be a better spoiler than Marguilies.)
Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex (Performance was great.)
Ming-Na Wen, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D (Great as well.)
Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey (She was less great than the previous years.)

Keep in mind that it is not the whole series a performance is based on. They pick one episode and judge on that one only.

Tatiana Maslany is amazing. She plays nine characters. Watching her play a character who is playing another character is incredible. No one else has ever done anything like this.

Mariska Hargitay by far deserves this emmy. Her acting throughout season 15 in Law and Order: SVU was phenomenal and just downright amazing. The season 15 premire and the rest of the Benson/Lewis saga proved this. Amazing actress and deserves endless recognition. She's just getting better and better every season. And don't forget, she even directed one of the episodes in season 15.

I have watched all these performances. No actress can touch Tatiana Maslany. None. She is hands down the best thing on TV- man or woman.

Here for Tatiana Maslany and Connie Britton.

Keri Russell, The Americans is good too, but the fact that she is the second best just shows how much Claire Danes is above everybody right now

The writing for Homeland was "too much" this year but there is not even a question in my mind who the actress on T.V. and it is not even close. This award should be called the Claire Danes award. Any other person playing this role and Homeland would have been flat from the beginning.

Keri Russell
Tatiana Maslany
Claire Danes( the show was pretty much rubbish last season, Carrie was even more grating but Clair played her well its difficult to ignore).
Robin wright
Everyone but Kerry washington , considering how overrated her show is, I find Bellamy young impressive than Kerry ( my opinion, I couldn't even watch more than 3 episode of the show, the drama feels forced)

Unpopular opinion But neither Kerry Washington or Michelle Dockery deserve to be nominated. There are other actresses who are better & deserve to take their spot i.e. Tatiana Maslany, Kerri Russell, Juliana Margulies, Lizzy Caplan..etc

Tatiana Maslany doesn't get nominated, the world isn't fair.

I hope to god that Keri Russel gets a nod this year. She's been absolutely fantastic on The Americans this season.

Akash Vijay

Julianna Margulies was very impressive this time and I really hope she wins but this year it's Robin Wright's to lose.

I don't understand all the hype about Robin Wright in House of Cards. Having watched both seasons of the show on Netflix, I have not been that impressed with her acting or Spacey's acting (or the show in general, for that matter). If my family and friends didn't insist on watching the show, I doubt I would have made it past episode 3 in the first season. Truthfully, no actress on television can compete with Claire Danes. She remains the most compelling and visceral television actress at the moment. Although, if she is to be dethroned, I would like to see the award go to Vera Farmiga instead of Wright.

Peter Knegt & Ben Travers, you guys are fogetting the actual frontrunner this year: Mariska Hargiday (Law & Order: SVU).
Watch her performance in the Season 15 premier episode ("Surrender Benson"), read the reviews, watch the performance again, and weep.
She got this Emmy in the bag. She is Emmy royalty, and this year, her 9th nomination will also be her 2nd win.

ROBIN WRIGHT will win.. her performance is the best at the moment

They should already give it to Robin Wright. There’s no chance for the other ladies, her performance in HoC is an acting masterclass.

Scandal has been terrible this season and the writing has been absolutely horrific for Kerry Washington. It would be a crime for her to receive a nomination over someone much more deserving like Vera Farmiga.
