“Orange is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan had sex on the brain at a recent Hollywood Radio and Television Society lunch. “I love graphic sex, the more sex the better,” Kohan announced to the audience, before explaining that her problem is often persuading her actors to do it, or getting around the contracts they already have in place.
Kohan also revealed that it wasn’t only the female cast who she was requiring to strip down. “We have some male frontal nudity this season,” she said, “but I don’t think it’s going to be erect”.
We love how Jenji Kohan plays the publicity game. She knows damn well that if she says stuff like this in public, people like us will write headlines and people like you will click on them. Which is fine – way to make a great show even better, we say to this “news”. But it’s all part of the “trojan horse” policy she has spoken of many times before – using an easily marketable or relatable hook to get down to the business of what she really wants to say.
If you need any further evidence of that, have another look at the trailer for Season 2 (which has rapidly clocked up over 6 million YouTube views in less than five days). If this tells us anything, it is that what we have in store from June 6th is firmly an ensemble show – perhaps the most diverse on TV today. And for that, we could hardly be more excited.
