OkCupid, Gay Activist: Homophobic Mozilla CEO Steps Down After Dating Site Launches Protest

Earlier this week, dating/hookup website OKCupid did something pretty fantastic. When users tried to access the site via Mozilla Firefox, they got this:

You could go on and access the site anyway if you wanted (but if you’re reading this blog, let’s hope you opened Safari instead), but it was a nice, mildly ballsy gesture on OKCupid’s part. And — who’d of guessed — it worked! Just four days later, Brendan Eich has stepped down as Mozilla’s CEO, and Mozilla released this statement:

“Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it. We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves,” read the post, in part. “We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.”

Well, well, looks like it’s safe to open Firefox again. As for OKCupid, I officially forgive you for sending me on all those tragic dates. Here’s to dating/hookup sites protesting horrible people everywhere!

A new version of McCarthyism is alive and well in the U.S. Scary times.

Debbie, you sound like a cry baby calling the kettle black. You are not as different as you like to believe.

Why should this mans beliefs have anything to do with his ability to perform his job? Should Obama step down? Should Hillary not run? They both held the same stand on same sex marriage as this man. People yell and scream for their rights while they take others rights..hypocritical Dont you think? If anyone doesn't fall to your beliefs they lose their job or you make their lives miserable? I hope billions ban Mozilla..this was a dirty step.

OkCupid is a waste of time and energy. It is an intolerant and hypocritical group run by small minded and idiotic fools who don't believe in American values of free expression and opinion. Only bigoted small minded morons belong to this group and are led by the small minded and bigoted idiots that run this moronic group. If you value freedom of opinion and expression stay away from this idiotic perverted website.

Congratulations to OKCupid! A terrific victory for narrow minded, fascist McCarthyites. If someone doesn't believe as you do, silence them, vilify them. Don't try to reason with people, don't try to convince others yours is the right way – it takes so long and it's so hard. Better to silence your opponents through intimidation, taking away their livelihoods, even force if necessary. After all, yours is the right way to think, theirs is wrong. They don't matter.

How odd, no, make that disgusting, that the hypocrites seeking "tolerance" have no tolerance for those with whom they disagree.

I don’t understand this issue. Being against gay marriage does not equal being homophobic. It is how they were raised in whatever religion that teaches this is wrong, not to mistreat people who disagree with you. I am a Libertarian, and I really just don’t care. I do find that the “tolerance” crowd has shown it’s true stripes, speech is tolerated only when it agrees with you, otherwise, it must be crushed. Can you spell hypocrisy?

Am actually glad people have woken up to the Governments and corporations agenda against religion (Google, Firefox, MS & 99.9%). I think people need to wake up before they lose all their freedom which our forefathers fought hard for and gave their lives for. Straight People, Churches, Mosques and Synagogues maybe need to be just as vocal and brutal as the Gay activists are.

In 2008, when this donation was made, future president Barack Obama was against marriage equality.

the guy invented java script, so maybe everyone should stop using the internet in protest.

"Who would've guessed"

A really, really hollow victory. That stunt by OKCupid was lower than the worst kind of tabloid journalism and has conversely done further harm to freedom of expression, diversity and tolerance.
