With its North American release this Friday, Sony’s marketing onslaught for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is drawing to a close but that doesn’t mean the studio is all out of tidbits that make the mouths of fanboys water.
Rope Of Silicon and ComingSoon reports that the studio—as media conglomerates are wont to do—has attempted to further court the millennial market by creating an easter egg for fans in the end credits that requires the use of the app Shazam. How does it work? Use the Shazam app during the sequel’s end credits where “It’s On Again,” the Alicia Keys and Kendrick Lamar collaboration, plays (you can listen to the song below). What you’re greeted with is the end credit sequence itself, just without the actual credits, but the sequence contains very clear references to the villains that will likely become “The Sinister Six.” Since the easter egg is tied to a song that’s already been released to the public, the sequence has already been seen and some of the villain references include the Green Goblin, Rhino, Vulture, Doc Ock, Kraven the Hunter, and either Mysterio or the Chameleon—it’s kind of hard to tell. Download Shazam and try for yourself or check out the screengrabs below.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Screen Crush, director Marc Webb revealed to what extent Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson was originally involved in the film before the role itself was completely excised shortly after wrapping up her shoot. Webb downplayed the importance MJ would have had in the sequel, saying “It was just one scene around the montage where she’s the next door neighbor. And I think there was another scene with her and Gwen near the end. So it was a minor thing. Super minor thing. It was just like a little hint.”
Since we felt the film was overstuffed as it is—read our review—we’re glad that we didn’t have to see Woodley essentially waste her talent onscreen for what sounds like the role of a glorified extra. If you absolutely can’t help yourself, you can catch “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” when it swings into North American theaters this Friday.
