'War Horse' Actor Jeremy Irvine Takes The Lead In Roland Emmerich's 'Stonewall'

The questionable idea of Roland Emmerich — he of “Independence Day,” “2012” and “The Day After Tomorrow” fame — directing a dramatization of the Stonewall Riots just got a little less questionable: Jeremy Irvine, the dreamy “War Horse” actor, has been cast as the film’s lead. I mean, other than suggesting the film will at least have some eye candy, it clearly doesn’t address the concern as to whether Emmerich is the right person to handle giving the cinematic treatment to one of the gay rights movements’ most pivotal moments. But for now let’s try and be benefit-of-the-doubt-y about it, and at least admire that the director — who is openly gay — decided to use the power brought to him via all those blockbusters and try do something good with it.  We’ll find out next year (the film starts shooting in New York City soon), but until then, revisit why Irvine’s previous lead role was pretty darn gay too.
