The Weinstein Company has debuted a stunning first trailer for the French language biopic, “Yves Saint Laurent,” which chronicles the meteoric rise of the famed design virtuoso who began as an apprentice to Christian Dior and, in the aftermath of Dior’s untimely death, took up the reigns of his mentor’s eponymous label with the debut of a magnificent collection that brought the fashion world to his feet.
The trailer is edited such that it resembles an editorial spread you might see in the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar or W. The vibrancy of the color scheme matches the drama of Saint Laurent’s professional and personal life stride for stride.
The absence of dialogue in the trailer — save for the final moments where we hear newcomer Pierre Niney, who plays Saint Laurent in the film, say in French, “I am Yves Saint Laurent,” — begs further comparison to the pages upon pages that make up the editorial spreads in fashion magazines. Each cut gives the same feeling as flipping the page of a magazine.
The resemblance between Saint Laurent and Niney’s professional debuts is also quite uncanny. Similar to Saint Laurent, who debuted his first collection for Christian Dior at the tender age of 21, Niney is making his debut in the international cinema arena at 25.
TWC picked up the U.S. distribution rights at Berlinale last month. The film opened in France back in January, played at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, and is slated to release in the U.S. on June 25. Watch the trailer below:
