2014 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor

2014 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions through August 25th, when the winners will be announced.

Despite multiple nominations in the category for both Benedict Cumberbatch and Idris Elba, neither have been able to take home the acting prize for their respective miniseries, “Sherlock” and “Luther.” They may have to wait another year. With strong contenders like Mark Ruffalo for “The Normal Heart” and Billy Bob Thornton for “Fargo” — not to mention Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor in the mix — the 2014 lineup is packed before even mentioning everyone’s favorite “Hobbit” and Dr. Watson, Martin Freeman. Really, anyone could foreseeably walk away with this one.

Below are predictions for best TV movie/miniseries actor from both Indiewire Awards Editor Peter Knegt and TV Editor Ben Travers. Check out predictions in all the categories here.

The nominees:
Benedict Cumberbatch, “Sherlock: His Last Vow”
Chiwetel Ejiofor, “Dancing on the Edge”
Idris Elba, “Luther”
Martin Freeman, “Fargo”
Mark Ruffalo, “The Normal Heart”
Billy Bob Thornton, “Fargo”

Ben’s predictions:
Will win: Billy Bob Thornton, “Fargo”
Could win: Mark Ruffalo, “The Normal Heart”
Should win: Billy Bob Thornton, “Fargo”
Shoulda been here: Rob Lowe, “Killing Kennedy”

Peter’s predictions:
Will win: Billy Bob Thornton, “Fargo”
Could win: Mark Ruffalo, “The Normal Heart”
Should win: Billy Bob Thornton, “Fargo”
Shoulda been here: Warwick Davis, “Life’s Too Short”

both Thornton and Freeman in Fargo were out standing. Of the rest that I have Ejiofor was brilliant in a subtle nuances performance that played nicely off Matthew Goode. Elba stand out for sheer presence. Cumberbatch turned in his usual Sherlock performance but he is helped by a witty script that plays to his strengths

Now, I have watched a lot of TV Films and Mini-Series this year and never missed a critically-acclaimed one. I will list only the six I believe will be nominated then the spoilers.

Billy Bob Thornton, Fargo (Really? Now, Thornton can't be defeated, except if Freeman comes)
Martin Freeman, Fargo (If he submits here, then he'll be a huge competitor)
Christopher Plummer, Barrymore (I didn't really enjoy the film, but Plummer deserves an Emmy)
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing on the Edge (What a shocking performance, really?)
Idris Elba, Luther (Now, I think this one spoils)
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlcok (Yes, Holmes is as good as Luther)

Now, Mark Ruffalo was in a film with an amazing plot and directions, writings and cast, but I think his performance is not able to beat the other competitors.

Ricky Gervais, Derek
Dominic West, Burton and Taylor
Emun Elliott, The Paradise
Rob Lowe, Killing Kennedy
Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart

Now, I think of all the spoilers, West, Lowe or Ruffalo is in.

But, to think of it, thank goodness True Detective, Downton Abbey and Homeland are not here. All the four leading actors would take four of the six slots, leaving two maybe for anyone from Fargo and a fight between Plummer, Cumberbatch, Elba and Ejiofor.

right now i am watching The Normal Heart on sky atlantic channel

mark ruffalo will win

I think this is Christopher Plummer's to lose.

There wasn't a Sherlock nomination past year for Cumberbatch because there wasn't a Sherlock season past year
