Abel Ferrara’s ‘Welcome to New York’ To Receive Special Screening Outside of Cannes Official Selection

Abel Ferrara's 'Welcome to New York' To Receive Special Screening Outside of Cannes Official Selection

Cannes just got a little more scandalous with the addition of a special out-of-competition screening added to the slate.

Abel Ferrara’s latest film “Welcome to New York” will be granted its own screening outside the official selection berth. French sales house Wild Bunch, who recently announced a lineup of raunchy projects for the marketplace, will host the international premiere on Saturday, May 17, the same day that the film will bypass a theatrical release and become available as an E-Cinema streaming release in France and other European countries.

“Welcome to New York” stars Gérard Depardieu as Mr. Devereaux, a Dominique Strauss-Kahn lookalike who, according to the synopsis,”handles billions of dollars every day. A man who controls the economic fate of nations. A man driven by a frenzied and unbridled sexual hunger.” In the trailer we can see Depardieu lounging with gorgeous women and getting hauled away in handcuffs, though any resemblance to real persons is purely coincidence, says the trailer’s disclaimer.

Ferrara is usually a fixture at Cannes and is a widely respected filmmaker in those parts, so even if the film is not in competition it’s sure to make a big statement come opening weekend.
