After Meeting w/ St Louis Rams, OWN Decides To Postpone Michael Sam Docu-series

“After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, The Untitled Michael Sam Project has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team. OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best. It’s clear that we, along with the world, recognize the important opportunity that Michael now has in this moment.  We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams.” – Erik Logan, president of OWN

“After today’s meeting with the Rams, we collectively feel it is best to postpone the project. This will allow for Michael to have a total focus on football, and will ensure no distractions to his teammates. Everybody involved remains committed to this project and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message.” – Michael Sam’s agent Cameron Weiss. ”

This news comes just 2 days after OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced a new multi-part documentary series following the life of Michael Sam, who made history when he became the first openly gay football player drafted into the NFL by the St. Louis Rams.

The Untitled Michael Sam Project” was to spotlight the former University of Missouri football player and his historic journey as he prepares to enter the biggest professional sports league in America.

This special documentary series was to present a deeply personal, up-close look at Sam’s groundbreaking moment in professional sports, as the All-American defensive end and SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year enters the competitive world of professional football. Cameras would follow Sam as he works to earn his spot on the St. Louis Rams, all while under the intense scrutiny of being the first openly gay player in the NFL.

OWN did not say when it plans to revisit the project.

After coming out in February, Sam would eventually be drafted by by the Rams with the 249th overall pick of the NFL Draft on May 10.

Duh! Of course this was premature. Being selected in the draft and making the team are two different things. This series would've been a huge distraction. Reminds me of Shaq calling himself a basketball player, a rapper and an actor while throwing brick free throws and his team being ousted from the NBA finals in 4 straight games. Once he dropped the actor and rapper titles and focused on basketball, he started winning championships. Not every human experience needs a damn reality tv series.

Deja Vu

I honestly don't understand why people were upset about this documentary series. How was this going to be any different than the countless documentaries that ESPN makes about world famous athletes?
