Cannes 2014 What I Saw #5: Two Days, One Night

Two Days, One Night (Deux Jours, Une Nuit)
by the Dardennes Brothers shows the fight of a working class young woman to hold on to her financially precarious and hard-won section of the workforce.
The sixteen workers in her section are promised a bonus if they vote to oust her and she has two days and one night to convince them to forgo their bonus
in order to allow her to keep her job. The formulaic premise is a bit simple, even gimmicky, but Marion Cotillard’s creation of this frail woman, being beaten down by the
system and coming out stronger for having persevered in spite of the system is so accomplished, and the true-to-life reasons her colleagues give her for
their vote shines upon humanity in a way that satisfies our own need to keep up the good fight for our independence even when exhausted by the strain of
life itself. The simplicity of the message, “workers of the world, unite” is, as it always is in the Dardenne Brothers’ films, illuminating to the spirit.
