Bonjour mes amis. Comment allez vous? May is the time the film industry turns its attention to a small French city for the most famous and, yes, snootiest of the world’s film festivals, Cannes. As has been the case in recent years the festival is showcasing a larger percentage of smaller, more independent fare so gone are the days of TGV trains from London to Paris transporting “The Da Vinci Code” cast. Now it’s more conducive to indie veterans to show their latest wares.
Having said that there are a few films of note for American audiences, including Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher”, which Sony Classics recently acquired, with Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice”, a crime mystery with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon and Alexander Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Birdman”, with Edward Norton and Emma Stone.
One of the most talked about films au Cannes is Tommy Lee Jones’ most recent directorial effort, “The Homesman”, in which he stars along with Hilary Swank and “Hope Springs” co-star Meryl Streep. In addition, there’s “Lost River”, Ryan Gosling’s helming debut, with Gosling, Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes, David Cronenberg’s latest, “Maps To The Stars”, with Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson and John Cusack and lastly Michel Hazanavicius’ follow up to “The Artist”, “The Search”, starring wife Berenice Bejo.
