Cinedigm has launched Docurama, a free, ad-supported, on-demand streaming channel featuring documentary content.
The new direct-to-consumer digital channel will be available on over 165 million consumer devices including connected TVs (Samsung, Sony, RCA, Humax), set top boxes (Amazon Fire, Roku, Tivo Roamio, Western Digital TV), tablets (Samsung) and gaming consoles (Xbox).
The channel, the first of a series of digital channels that Cinedigm is planning, features work from renowned documentary filmmakers such as Alex Gibney, Fred Wiseman, Stacy Peralta, Liz Garbus and Joe Berlinger.
Cinedigm acquired Docurama, a 15-year-old documentary distributor, two years ago and last year, Cinedigm and Docurama experimented with a YouTube channel which offered pay-per-view documentaries. With the launch of the new digital channel, the YouTube channel will be eliminated.
“It’s very exciting that audiences now have free, unfettered access to our incredible documentary library,” said Cinedigm’s Docurama President Susan Margolin. “For more than 15 years, our mission has been to offer filmmakers the broadest possible visibility for their work. It’s thrilling to have such an enormous opportunity in front of us.”
By mid-summer, Docurama will present over 1,000 titles, with fresh content programmed weekly, including seasonal themes and holiday titles. The channel will share behind-the-scenes interviews with filmmakers, documentary subjects and festival programmers. Docurama also plans to present curated film festival coverage; short-form and early pre-release sneak peeks and clips for upcoming films to be programmed.
