Exclusive Video: Martin Starr and Newcomer Dina Shihabi Make an Awkward-But-Totally-Adorable Couple in 'Sam & Amira'

In light of the Veterans Administration scandal that broke open in the media just a few weeks ago, the trailer for the upcoming indie romantic comedy “Sam & Amira,” couldn’t have dropped at a more appropriate time.

“Freaks and Geeks” and “Party Down” alum Martin Starr plays Sam, a former Green Beret who served in Iraq and is having trouble re-adjusting to life in the states. Sam tries out stand-up comedy (a long-time dream) and starts working for his cousin’s investment firm on Wall Street — but no matter what he does, he still feels like an outsider. Sparks fly, however, when Basaam, Sam’s interpreter during the war, asks Sam to protect his niece, Amira, an illegal immigrant who fled Iraq after the start of the war.

Although he is a combat veteran and she is a victim of the war in which he fought, their shared experience as outsiders allows them to form a strong bond. But when Amira is threatened with deportation, Sam must risk everything to save his newfound love. Newcomer Dina Shihabi stars as Amira, while Paul Wesley (“Vampire Diaries”) and Laith Nakli (“The Visitor”) round out the cast as Charlie, Sam’s cousin, and Basaam, respectively.

While laughter may not seem like the most appropriate prescription for addressing veterans’ issues, it is probably the easiest way to get people to sit down and listen. And that is always the first step in overcoming a problem: communication.

So here’s to hoping. “Sam & Amira” will make its debut tonight, May 30th, at the Seattle International Film Festival. Watch the full trailer — and check out the exclusive poster — below:
