As universally expected, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (20th Century Fox) was the dominant force in Friday’s domestic Top 10, banking $36 million between late Thursday night and Friday shows. Impressively, that made up about 60% of the 10. But that’s also where the bad news comes in.
That sum fell more than $23 million short of last year’s total for the day, which was then led by four films grossing $9 million or more. This year, only “X-Men” managed above that level. This also ranks below the best “X-Men” opening (“Last Stand” did $45 million opening day in 2006, with lower ticket prices and no 3D boost). As usual these days, foreign revenues, will likely close the gap in revenues, as the film opened almost everywhere this weekend.
The other opening film, the rom-com “Blended” (Warner Bros.) with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, could do no better than third place at $4.4 million. This made it the lowest opening day for Sandler since 2007 (“Reign Over Me”), a period that covers nine other live-action releases.
A big contributor to the drop came from #2 “Godzilla,” which fell more than $29 million from its initial take for only $8.84 million. The weekend should likely rebound a bit, and the film — which is doing very strong international business — should land at around $150 million by Monday. But this fall is worrisome and, along with the sense of a weaker tally overall, it suggests a summer than could fall far short of last year’s great take.
Coming in at #4, “Neighbors” (Universal), with $4.2 million, crossed the $100 million mark in only its third weekend. But no other film could exceed $2 million, with #5 “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (Sony) at that number. This is a critical weekend for the fate of “Million Dollar Arm” (Buena Vista) to see if hoped-for word of mouth overcomes its disappointing opening. At #6, just over $1.8 million, it shows mixed results, at best, at the moment.
#7 is “The Other Woman” (20th Century Fox) at $1.07 million, passing $75 million. “Chef” (Open Road) on only 498 screens, as it gradually expands in its third week, landed at #8 with $562,000. Longer-running “Rio 2” (20th Century Fox) and “Heaven Is for Real” (Sony) — with $525,000 and $500,000 respectively — rounded out the Top 10.
