Jesse and Beca are Going to Be Reunited in 'Pitch Perfect 2,' Plus 5 More Reasons We're Excited About This Sequel

We’ve talked about the slightly questionable presentation of LGBT character Cynthia Rose before, but other than that we are pretty unashamedly huge fans of “Pitch Perfect” here at /bent. And yesterday we had some doubly exciting news about the sequel. Not only did the paparazzi catch some shots which confirmed that filming has officially started, the news was also confirmed that Skylar Austin, who played love interest Jesse, will be returning. For anyone who has watched the adorable musical finale to the first film on YouTube a few too many times (a day), this is pretty great news.

And it’s not like we weren’t excited already! The constant slew of Hollywood sequels is one of the most depressing aspects of the industry, but we’re giving this one a free pass, and here are five reasons why:

1. The entire principal cast is returning

It’s not just Anna Kendrick and Skylar Astin who made the first film. Far from it. Boasting that sadly rare beast, a female-led comedy ensemble, everyone from breakout star Rebel Wilson to Bellas stalwarts Anna Camp and Brittany Snow are confirmed for the sequel, and we can’t wait to see them reunited.

2. Kay Cannon has written the script

After single-handedly delivering a cracker of a screenplay last time round, Universal have seen sense and allowed Kay Cannon to script the follow-up, rather than bringing in a team of new writers to meddle with her formula.

3. Elizabeth Banks is directing

This is even more exciting – producer and supporting star Elizabeth Banks has taken over directing duties from Jason Moore. Too many times in Hollywood we’ve seen a woman deliver a successful film only for a male director to take over for the higher budgeted sequel. Here, the reverse has happened – and it will be one of the widest releases for a woman-directed film in 2015 without a doubt. For such a female-centric film, that is a blessing, and we can’t wait to see how Banks does with her directorial debut.

4. Drake may be playing Rebel Wilson’s love interest

Unconfirmed, true, but since Rebel Wilson let slip the possibility, we can’t help but be excited about the idea of Drake – who has displayed his comic chops in the past – appearing as Fat Amy’s love interest, not to mention the fact that Fat Amy is getting a love interest in the first place.

5. There’s less than a year to go until its release

The film hits US theaters on May 15, 2015. It may seem a way off, but there’s plenty of YouTube clips of a cappella performances to watch until then…
