Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, & Jessica Chastain Casting “Prototypes” For ‘True Detective’ Season 2

Joaquin Phoenix, Christian Bale, & Jessica Chastain Casting "Prototypes" For 'True Detective' Season 2

Nic Pizzolatto’s “True Detective season two will start casting in the next month, and buzz and speculation about what’s coming next in the series is still going strong. Not hurting any is Pizzolatto’s recent tease: the second season will feature three lead characters, will be set in California and will still explore the “psychosphere” of that different milieu. All this has led to another rash of fun memes, Twitter users posting their favorite iconic trio with the #TrueDetectiveSeason2 hash tag.

So who will these three characters be? This much is certain, the roles are for two males and a female character (as promised), but there’s not much else. And yes, Matthew Mcconaughey and Woody Harrelson won’t be coming back — the series’ raison d’être is to examine crime with a new setting and new characters each season and that idea has held firm so far.

But if you need a small idea of what’s to come, Deadline says “unofficial breakdowns floated around” reveal the three characters are modelled on Christian Bale, Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, and Jessica Chastain. Of course none of these busy actors will likely star in the series and Chastain has even said so herself already. They’re essentially the “prototypes.” What does that mean? Well, in an ideal world those actors would take the parts, but since that’s almost certainly not going to happen, the filmmakers are looking for actors close to that age, build, range, personality, etc.

So just those actors alone, a mid-late 30-something female and two males in their 40s or approaching that age does give you an idea of what they’re going for (Brolin being 46 puts that actor probably somewhere in early-to-mid 40s, depending on who’s cast). Rumors have swirled around names like Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, as well as “The Normal Heart” star Taylor Kitsch, but good luck if you are banking on any of those (Kitsch being the easiest to nab, but we don’t see it). That being said, The Daily Beast has sources saying “two very big male actors” are being eyed and that, “You’d be surprised how big these guys are.”

What else to expect? Well, in the “lesser-known” corners of California – the setting Pizzlatto said he’d like to investigate (i.e. not Los Angeles) – new season of True Detective would explore, “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.”

Will director Cary Fukunaga return? Nope. “I’m not part of it. I’ll continue as an executive producer, but I don’t want to continue in the daily showrunner kinda way—it’s too much,” he told The Playlist in an interview last year. Normally in TV, several directors helm several episodes, but Fukunaga did the rare turn of directing the entire series in one shot, a gig that he found exhausting. “When you shoot episodically you stop and you prep the next episode, but we didn’t have scripts for the last 2 episodes when we started and we didn’t have schedules or anything, we knew basically when we would have it finished by, but that was it. Everyone was exhausted… bit definitely took its toll on everyone involved. It’s an impossible amount [to shoot].”

That said, Fukunaga is staying on in an executive producer role. And word is that season two will likely use several filmmakers like a traditional show and that’s what you should expect. Much more to come, but not a frame has been shot yet and already we’re very curious to see where this goes.

None of those actors please…I am yet to watch the first series because i cannot stand matthew mcconaughey. Though may cave in. I preferred the Wire casting…much more interesting

Please not Johnny Depp, please not Johnny Depp.

Of course it's two guys and a girl … weak … it should be two girls and a guy, and have the cast from "Two Girls and a Guy" — Robert Downey, Jr., Heather Graham and Natasha Gregson Wagner.

Even if it won't happen, the idea if Bale & Phoenix in this kind of story would be great.
