Music Box Films Swoops Down On Jonathan Franzen's 'Emptying the Skies'

“A call to action for anyone who cherishes the natural world” – that’s what Ed Arentz and William Schopf of Music Box Films called the documentary “Emptying the Skies.”

The documentary follows a squad of bird protectors who wage a secret war to save the endangered songbirds, a journey first chronicled by best-selling novelist Jonathan Franzen’s essay. Today, all US distribution rights to this documentary were acquired by Music Box Films, with Canadian rights going to distributor Films We Like.

The documentary was directed by Douglas and Roger Kass and executive produced by Franzen. “I’m very happy to think that our story of embattled Mediterranean birds and their passionate defenders will be reaching a wider American audience,” said Franzen.

Music Box plans a theatrical release later this year.
