Oh My God! AnnaSophia Robb and Evan Peters are a Coppola-fied Ariel and Eric in Funny or Die's Mock Trailer for 'The Little Mermaid'

Even Sofia Coppola’s biggest fans (myself included) are mystified by her decision to adapt Hans Christan Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” Nevertheless, in honor of the Strokes-loving, teenage angst-exploring director, Funny or Die has released a mock trailer for the film, starring AnnaSophia Robb and Evan Peters.

It’s a hilarious clip that exemplifies everything we’ve come to love (or hate) about Coppola–her signature title fonts, dreamy soundtracks, and exploration of teenage isolation. The trailer taps into it all.

In the clip Robb’s Ariel is a lonely adolescent, confined to her bedroom at the bottom of a swimming pool. She’s bored and texts her friend Flounder from her shell phone. She also longs to find love and walk amongst the humans at the Shellteau Marmont Hotel (a nod to Coppola’s 2010 feature “Somewhere”). That’s when she meets Eric, a bro-type with a cast on his arm. Is it love at first sight? Does anything actually happen?

These are some of the questions explored in this pseudo-trailer for “The Little Mermaid.”
