“Rosewater” is an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling memoir “Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival” by Maziar Bahari. Gael Garcia Bernal stars as Bahari, a BBC journalist who is detained in Iran and brutally interrogated in prison for more than 100 days. The only recognizable attribute of Bahari’s captor was that he smelled of rosewater. Stewart took a portion of last summer off from his Comedy Central series “The Daily Show” to shoot the film in Jordan.
“This is an exciting, prestigious project and we could not be happier to partner with Jon Stewart, Scott Rudin, Gigi Pritzker and the rest of the OddLot team,” said Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films, in a release. “We look forward to a successful release of this compelling film.”
