Servings Of Death & Debauchery In First Trailer For 'Hieroglyph' (Condola Rashad As Nefertari Kanahkt)

Here’s a first trailer for Fox’s upcoming new series Hieroglyph, which is expected to debut on the network’s lineup next TV season.

Set in ancient Egypt, Hieroglyph is said to be combo fantasy and reality, an ambitious action-adventure series from Pacific Rim and Clash of the Titans writer Travis Beacham, which will follow a notorious thief who leaves prison to serve the Pharaoh – a move that places him amid lots intrigue within palace walls; sex, crime, the usual.

Here’s the much longer, official synopsis:

The world of ancient Egypt – a time of magic, Pharaohs, gods and thieves – lives again in HIEROGLYPH, an exciting action adventure series from the mind of creator/executive producer Travis Beacham (“Pacific Rim,” “Clash of the Titans”). When a dangerous scroll, The Book of Thresholds, is stolen from Egypt’s most secure vault, master thief AMBROSE (Max Brown, “Beauty and the Beast,” “MI-5”) is plucked from prison to track down the perpetrator. Having spent the past five years in the darkest of pits, Ambrose quickly learns that his prison cell might be safer than the dangerous new world in which he finds himself: Atum, the empire’s capital. Ambrose must answer to Pharaoh SHAI KANAKHT (Reece Ritchie, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”), a god in the flesh, a young ruler with a cool charm and a violent, frightening temper. The question for Ambrose is not whether he can trust his new boss, but whether he can trust anyone. Also stalking the halls of the palace is NEFERTARI KANAKHT (Condola Rashad, “Smash,” “Steel Magnolias”), half-sister to the Pharaoh, whose relationship with Shai’s closest advisor, MAGISTER BEK, masks her own designs for power. Finding few leads in the palace, Ambrose’s investigation takes him to the doorstep of his long lost love, PESHET (Caroline Ford, “Lake Placid: The Final Chapter”), a magic-wielding adoratrice, a type of homespun priestess who uses her femininity as a portal to the gods…for the right price. Peshet was the keystone in his merry band of thieves, an impressionable youth with great knowledge of magic, a woman who never saw a lock for which she didn’t have an unlocking charm. Five years later, Peshet has left her old life behind in a pious pursuit of divine contact. Ambrose’s journey leads him to old friends, such as VOCIFER (John Rhys-Davies, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark”), a peddler of mystical wares and Ambrose’s mentor. But he also comes face-to-face with foes both old and new, from DJET, a brutish thug-turned-crime boss of the city; to RAWSER (Antony Bunsee, “EastEnders,” “Sex and the City 2”), the Pharoah’s captain of the guard, who imprisoned him five years ago; to LOTUS TENRY (Kelsey Chow, “One Tree Hill”), a palace concubine and spy for a rival kingdom. As Ambrose unravels the mystery of the Book of Thresholds, he begins to see the extent to which sorcery has seeped into the halls of power in ancient Egypt, and how close it is to causing this great civilization’s downfall.

Condola Rashad in what will be her first TV series regular role, plays Nefertari Kanahkt – “a rare beauty who intimidates even the strongest of suitors… and she knows it,” as Fox describes how the character will be portrayed in the series.

Expect a 13-episode series from 20th TV and Chernin Entertainment.

Condola is one of the leads only on paper because her role will be sleeping with all the white men. That's her purpose on the show. The more significant roles will be played by the white actors.

what in thee world

This is not Egypt. This is another White fairytale version of Egypt with some Blacks sprinkled in for "authenticity." Please … it is time for us to start boycotting this and most of what Hollywood puts out, honestly. I'm soooooo tired of this … enough, is a doggone 'nough.

This needs MORE coverage. Dear, Shadow and Act– please stop being PC!! Egypt hasn't been covered in tv/film for a while because of main characters + skin color issue. They are afraid to make a mostly black cast because of image. I think we need to show Hollywood that it's not the 1960's anymore. BOYCOTT PLEASE!! I'd like to sign the PETITION!!!

Tell It Like It Is

There's finally an ancient Egyptian themed show with a black Nefertiti, and this victory and historical accuracy is negated by everyone else being white with British accents. Very disappointing. In my mind, this was supposed to be the entertainment industry's redemption for having Rachel Weisz play Nefertiti in "The Mummy."

Hollywood needs to take a look at hieroglyphics and the sarcophaguses of the pharaohs, since they refuse to believe that ancient Egyptians were of darker skin. Present day Egyptians are a complete different story due to the mixing with Middle Easterners.

EPIC FAIL. Go hard, or go home!

Based on this trailer, seems like a GAME OF THRONES: EGYPT. Doesn't intrigue me enough to watch. I'll put it in the BlackFolksGettin'ACheck folder. Gotta hand it to dem BRITS though. Peoples from Noah, to ancient Egypt, to the far reaches of the galaxy (whatever the time period) speak with their accent.

Hallelujah Hillbilly

more than half the cast of this show should be of a darker skin color than what appears onscreen. but, then again, i don't expect that kind of accuracy from writers that can't see themselves in people with a darker skin color than their own. they'll probably go the "Noah" route and say something about mythology, everyman, blah, blah, blah.

Whatever is going on with her hair is freaking me out. The look like little cones.

Glad to see Rashad and Ritchie, two African descended folks as the royals. Shouldn't there be more southwest Asian/North African looking folks?

"Ambrose"?? Was that even a name used at the time of the ancient Greeks? It sounds pretty Western European. LOL.

Condala & Ritchie Reece are people of african desecent playong egyptians. the others character on the show are greek, hittie. please support this show, because i Will.

I had no idea so many Egyptians were white with British accents, and I think one of the girls is asian lol. And no, black people didn't have relaxers back then either. Poor show, it will be cancelled after a few episodes.

Africans don't even count in AFRICA!!! #BOYCOTT
