Warners Comfy In Box Office Market Share Lead While Sony And Disney Locked In Battle Royal For 2nd

Frazier/Ali, Nelson/Napoleon, Bruins/Canadiens, Sony/Disney???  While overall box office leader Warner Brothers sits atop its perch with over $610 million so far in 2014, the battle for second just below them between Sony and Disney rages on and as of today both studios are right around the $558 million level.  My rough estimates as of today have Sony, thanks in large part to “Amazing Spider-Man 2” and the equally amazing “Heaven Is For Real” at $560 million and last week’s leader, Disney, thanks to “Captain America” and the never ending “Frozen”  at $559 million.  Universal sits in fourth with $482 million and don’t look now but this weeks #5 studio, Fox ($418 million), is only five days away from turning the latest “X-Men” loose on the public and has “The Fault In Our Stars” lurking on June 6th along with “How To Train Your Dragon 2” the week after, which should vault them up the charts (wow, I’m sounding more and more like Casey Kasem, aren’t I?  Coming up… your Long Distance Dedication!).

In looking ahead to the coming weeks, Disney has “Maleficent” on May 30th, as I mentioned, Fox has “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, “The Fault In Our Stars” and “Dragon 2”, Sony looks forward to “22 Jump Street”, Universal only has “A Million Ways To Die” until mid July and Warners could rule the roost for a while with “Blended”, “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Jersey Boys” coming before we finish June.
