A gorgeous trailer has landed for Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s latest effort, the 196-minute “Winter Sleep,” set to compete for the Palme d’Or at the upcoming Cannes. Ceylan’s brilliant “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia,” which nabbed the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2011, is an existential police procedural epic, incorporating a color palette that would make David Fincher envious and set in the bleak, haunting landscape of rural Turkey. It’s a must-see.
“Winter Sleep” again returns to the Turkish countryside, here to the lunar-like valley of Cappadocia. This first trailer has no English subtitles, but the stunning visuals are enough to have us completely hooked. It follows a former actor and his acrimonious relationships with his wife and sister, both of whom he works with to run a hotel in the fantastically rocky region.
No word yet on US distribution.
