As the Weinstein Company heads to Cannes next week, things may be finally coming together for the troubled festival opener “Grace of Monaco.” Following months of not-so-secret feuding over the film’s tone between Harvey Weinstein and the Grace Kelly biopic’s director, Olivier Dahan, Weinstein may keep it on his slate of titles after all: the veteran dealmaker is in final negotiations for stateside rights.
Weinstein was adamant about creating a lighter and breezier cut of the film, while Dahan (“La vie en rose”) wanted a darker tale. Thus when the film handed in to TWC was not as expected, the company tried to negotiate down its fee from $5 million to $3 million, claiming breach of contract. Last week it was reported that the film was potentially looking for a new stateside distributor.
Actually, the film has been off the Weinstein slate as of January, but its surprise selection as the Cannes opener made Weinstein reconsider–and a close relationship with Oscar perennial Kidman is another consideration for the awards whiz, who will also be promoting the re-edited Un Certain Regard entry “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. Assuming the TWC deal closes, the distributor will have to hustle to line up their approach to the North American press corps in Cannes. Opening night is just a week away.
Meanwhile, TWC has partnered with Worldview Entertainment on a five-year deal. Worldview has come on board to finance four Weinstein titles — Justin Chadwick’s “Tulip Fever” and Simon Curtis’s Helen Mirren starrer “The Woman in Gold,” along with two unannounced titles — while TWC will provide Worldview with four domestic theatrical and ancillary distribution slots per year.
