What do Glenn Beck, William Shakespeare, a dead parrot and a bunch of kids pounding on drums have in common? The answer, they’re all part of upcoming Alternative Content events.
If you’re not familiar with this format, events are filmed worldwide and shown (sometimes live) in movie theatres for one night only, with an occasional Met Opera encore. Events range from Met live feeds to concerts, to ballet to Monty Python reunions. While still a small part of exhibition’s overall business layout they are a means by which theatre owners can lure more people into screens during the week that generally see tumbleweeds blow through them. Fathom is the leader in this end of the business with other smaller companies providing content as well and the major studios have dipped their respective toes into the Event Cinema waters as well. Alternative Content will continue to grow over the coming months and years (it’s even more of a going concern overseas, especially in countries like England) so likewise look for these release schedules to expand as well.
