It’s been a homoerotic old summer for the usually super-macho world of frat boy comedy, if we can call it that. You may have caught our take on “Neighbors”, and the homoeroticism and apparent pandering to a gay audience within. And now we have “22 Jump Street” set to drop – a film which by all accounts turns up the dial to 11 on the bromance to end all bromances between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s undercover cops.
The boys have hit the publicity trail this week, and in an appearance on “Conan” they certainly weren’t playing down the homoeroticism that forms such a key part of their on-screen dynamic. We don’t want to spoil the video below, but suffice it to say it revolves around an apparent bet between the two men which certainly puts the homo in homoerotic.
A neat publicity strategy? Pandering to a gay audience? Maybe. But what makes it all bearable is the total nonchalance and cheeky pleasure that Hill and Tatum take in telling their tale, with scarcely a hint of embarrassment. If this is the new way for straight male actors to look edgy and make a few headlines in Hollywood, bring it on.
