Ted Hope doesn’t sit still for very long, The veteran indie producer (“American Splendor,” “The Ice Storm,” “In the Bedroom”) is reinventing himself –and Hollywood–yet again as he leaves the San Francisco Film Society to take the reins as CEO of online video-on-demand service Fandor. He’s also publishing a Soft Skull book on August 12, Hope for Film: From the Frontlines of the Independent Cinema Revolutions, and launching a six-part interactive web series “Reinvent Hollywood.”
On his quest for a new economic model for distributing independent film and engaging cinephiles in an interactive community, the Good Machine co-founder sees Fandor as an exciting opportunity to play out his ideas. Hence the new web series.
These days, as the rules of the game are constantly changing, both studio and indie talent are scrambling to understand how to engage. Hope asks: If you could redesign the film industry into the best possible system for the artists, the audience, and the business, what would it look like? Hope addresses the advent of low-cost digital production and post-production technology, which makes the tools to create and distribute both short and long-form filmed entertainment more accessible than ever–while Hollywood hangs on to its antiquated methods of finding and presenting this entertainment to the world.
During the six-part series “Reinvent Hollywood,” which is streamed live on Reinventors.net, Hope, anchor Austin Kleon and a team of industry experts discuss the state of the film industry. Each segment focuses on a topic that addresses the future of film: The Form, The Artists, The Audience, The Business, The Festivals, Schools, and Non-Profits, and The Rules of the Game.
Here’s the first episode, “The Form.” The second episode, “The Artists,” went live on its main page and on Google Plus on June 10. This roundtable includes writer-directors Paul Schrader (“Affliction,” “Light Sleeper’), Ritesh Batra (“The Lunchbox”), Melissa Silverstein, the founder and editor of our sister Indiewire blog Women And Hollywood, Variety critic Scott Foundas and Mynette Louis, president of Gamechanger Films.
