Screenwriter, producer and former Focus Features exec James Schamus is set to receive the 18th annual Outfest Achievement Award at this year’s edition of Outfest Los Angeles.
As a screenwriter, and producer, Schamus most closely collaborated with Ang Lee on “The Ice Storm,” “The Wedding Banquet” and the Oscar-nominated gay romance classic “Brokeback Mountain”; as CEO of Focus Features, his mark is indelibly felt on the quality of the output during his tenure. His next screenplay, “The Moon and the Sun,” a period romantic fantasy, will be seen onscreen in 2015.
As we saw last year at the Legacy Award event for Lee Daniels, Outfest knows how to throw a party. Schamus will be honored on Thursday, July 10 at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles. Past honorees include Kimberly Peirce, John Waters, Jane Lynch, Bill Condon, Gregg Araki, Todd Haynes, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman ,Gus Van Sant and Ian McKellen — in other words, the pantheon of figures of queer cinema.
