LISTEN: Indiewire's Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson Debate Cannes, Oscars and More in First Episode of 'Screen Talk'

Welcome to the very first edition of our weekly podcast, Screen Talk, featuring Indiewire chief film critic Eric Kohn and Thompson on Hollywood’s Anne Thompson discussing topics from the independent film world and beyond.

In this inaugural edition, the pair debate the best and worst of this year’s Cannes Film Festival and suss out the early stirrings of Oscar season. Shifting to new releases, they offer different takes on “The Rover,” David Michod’s post-apocalyptic follow-up to “Animal Kingdom,” while reaching a consensus on Robert Pattinson’s performance. With the L.A. Film Festival underway, another post-apocalyptic adventure enters the discussion: Opening night film “Snowpiercer,” an unconventional action movie from Korean director Bong Joon-ho that they both enjoy, which prompts Kohn to make a passionate (if unlikely) case for its commercial success.

Back on the subject of new releases, Thompson offers her take on “22 Jump Street,” while Kohn recommends two other movies opening in limited release today, “Coffee in Berlin” and “Manuscripts Don’t Burn.”

The conversation concludes with a discussion of Hollywood blogger Nikki Finke’s sudden return to the media landscape, as Thompson draws on her professional history with Finke to explore whether the famously competitive journalist can still have an impact in the industry.

Nice job. Definitely a little odd not hearing Kris and Anne but that would be the case with any replacement. The rapport isn't quite there but that's natural with a new show. I'm glad that you tried to maintain the balance of Anne's more mainstream leanings with Kris' more academic leanings by including Eric, although I'm not sure how well it will work (Kris was far less academic than Eric). I love Eric's viewpoint, just uncertain how well it'll mesh with Anne's.

Anyway, super glad to have the podcast back and hope that I'm wrong and you supersede Oscar Talk!

Congratulations to you both! I can't wait to listen!

hey Anne/Eric

like it but how about getting you for real not just the voices….??

Oh no, it's the twimom trying to comment on films… Indiewire trying to get hits again.
