Here’s today IMO sound off…if there is an actor whose career should have been much more than it has been it’s Guy Pearce. The Australian actor was brilliant in 1997’s “L.A. Confidential” and then absolutely mesmerized in the ultra cool mind-blow, “Memento”. But for some reason he was then relegated to supporting performances or starring roles in smaller films. He returns to the big screen this weekend in A24’s “The Rover”, a gritty action drama about an ex-soldier who travels a lawless Australian outback, tracking down the men who stole his only possession. Robert Pattinson co-stars, Joel Edgerton wrote the screenplay and David Michod (“Animal Kingdom”) directs.
Focus debuts the sci-fi thriller, “The Signal”, in 30 markets/100 theatres this weekend, prior to a June 20th expansion. The film stars Brenton Thwaites as the leader of a group of friends drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius and finds out what we all could have told him, that all is not as it seems. Olivia Cooke and Laurence Fishburne co-star.
Arc Entertainment releases day-and-date in theatre and on VOD on “Lullaby”, a euthanasia drama starring Garrett Hedlund, Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard and Anne Archer. In addition there’s “Hellion” from IFC, a troubled teen drama which stars Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis and Josh Wiggins.
