Gillian Robespierre explains how the short “Obvious Child,” which precluded the feature by about five years, was created as a response to what Robespierre calls “a slew of movies that we were not really connected to.”
Robespierre’s main goal with turning her short into a feature was to take the classic rom-com “best friend” — who is usually just a supporting character, but nevertheless, she insists, the one with the best jokes — and put her in the lead role.
“I think it’s important,” says Slate about her character, “that she seems like a real woman and not an untouchable, unmeetable person.”
