BOI Weekly: This Week’s Previews and Predictions

BOI Weekly: This Week's Previews and Predictions

THIS WEEK’S PREVIEWS AND PREDICTIONS:

PLANES: FIRE AND RESCUE—DISNEY—WIDE—83 MINS—PG—3D/D-BOX
Dane Cook returns as the voice of Dusty Crophopper and this time around he’s lending his aerial talents to fighting wildfires.  The first “Planes” opened to an acceptable $22 million back in August 2013, ultimately tipping the scales at $90 million.  Every family has worked so far this summer so here’s betting this one does as well, although I don’t believe “PFAR” will match the first outing’s $90 million total.

JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $28 MILLION

VOICE CAST: Dane Cook, Ed Harris, Julie Bowen, Hal Holbrook, Teri Hatcher, Erik Estrada (yes, that Erik Estrada)
DIRECTOR: Robert Gannaway
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS:  7:00 PM

SEX TAPE—SONY—WIDE—90 MINS—R
It’s hard to imagine a movie called “Sex Tape” with Cameron Diaz not working, right?  The Sony comedy is directed by Jake Kasdan who helmed both stars in 2011’s uproarious “Bad Teacher” as well as one of the underrated gems in recent memory, “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” (“I just never realized until this moment how easy it is to cut someone in half with a machete!”).  BOI contributor Nicole Hansen laughed all the way through the film at a screening last week and R rated comedies, unless you’re named Tammy or Seth MacFarlane, have fared pretty well this year.  And no smart a&$, this movie is NOT available in the D-Box format.

JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $26 MILLION

CAST:  Cameron Diaz, Jason Segal, Rob Corddry, Rob Lowe (Rob Lowe in a movie entitled “Sex Tape”.  I know.  It’s ironic)
DIRECTOR: Jake Kasdan
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 7:00 PM

THE PURGE: ANARCHY—UNIVERSAL—WIDE—103 MINS—R
One night a year America experiences “The Purge” where all crime is legal, or as it’s known by another name…Chicago in July.  For this year’s “Purge”, Ethan Hawke is gone, replaced by the guy from “Prison Break” and the girl from “Zero Hour” (not quite the same, is it?), however director James DeMonaco is back for more mayhem and mass hysteria and there’s no denying that first “Purge” was a surprise hit, opening to $34 million in June of last year, topping out at $64 million.

JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $24 MILLION

CAST: Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford
DIRECTOR:  James DeMonaco
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 8:00 PM
