It’s just possible, this time, that speculation that Mark Ruffalo was perfect casting for a revival of one of classic TV’s greatest characters on the big screen could yield results. Following a Twitter petition for a Ruffalo-led “Columbo” revival using the hashtag #RuffaloColumbo, the actor — –clearly attracted by the possibility–got into the conversation with scribe Garry Whitta, but eventually updated his followers with the news that "boohoo," Universal is developing a TV series based on the property.
Will Universal take note? Imagine a "Sherlock"-style limited series. Ruffalo revealed that Ed Solomon (co-writer on “Now You See Me”) had pitched the idea. Tenuous as the talk is, the attention this meme has received points toward the possibility that studios could take note of something as simple as a hashtag thread. While in all likelihood HBO ignored the Tweeted suggestions for who should star in Season Two of "True Detective," you can bet they learned from them. Hashtag advocacy could be put to good, efficient use.
