Dustin Lance Black and Leonardo DiCaprio Are Bringing a Charles Lindbergh Biopic to TV

Going down the biopic route once more, scribe Dustin Lance Black (“J. Edgar,” “Milk”) has signed a deal to pen a limited series following the life of intrepid aviator and explorer Charles Lindbergh.

Based on A. Scott Berg’s Pulitzer-awarded biography “Lindbergh,” the series will, in the words of executive producers Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Killoran, “explore Lindbergh’s true past.” (This is a way of saying that, surprise, the endeavor will put equal light on his public heroism as well as his anti-Semitism.) Berg and Kevin McCormick will co-produce.

According to Black, Lindbergh is “far from perfect,” yet nevertheless strived to “rectify the unseen ramifications of what the world still considers his greatest successes.” It’s early days on this one, as word on casting, directorial involvement, network, start dates, and so on is forthcoming.

Black will pen the series, originally a Paramount film project, for Paramount TV (relaunched last year under prez Amy Powell). Though relatively quiet in recent years, Black can be seen in the HBO gay marriage doc “The Case Against 8″ as a vocal proponent of the issue. This is yet another sign that television is the final destination for many projects once deemed movie material. Producer McCormick was for years a senior production executive at the Warner Bros. studio. Steven Spielberg was interested in a film on Lindbergh at one point–and admired Berg’s biography– but finally backed off due to his anti-Semitism, which was also a reason that he did not adapt Philip Roth”s “The Plot Against America,” which imagined what would happen if Lindbergh beat FDR in the 1940 race for president.
