Neil Berkeley’s hilarious road documentary “Harmontown,” which was a hit at SXSW 2014, will get a fall theatrical and VOD release in North America and the U.K. via The Orchard, an indie music, film and video distributor and multi-channel network. The film showcases “Community” creator Dan Harmon on tour with his podcast as well as Jason Sudeikis and Joel McHale, among others. Harmon prepped for “Community” by writing for shows such as “The Sarah Silverman Program” and the Jack Black/Ben Stiller pilot “Heat Vision and Jack.” Silverman, Black and Stiller also appear in the film (The Playlist review here).
Co-produced by Future You Pictures and Starburns Industries, “Harmontown” follows self-deprecating cynic Harmon after he’s fired from the hit series he created and takes his writing on the road, performing live podcasts for his fans around the country. The film starts out documenting Dan’s fans and evolves into a deeper character study. “It’s more than a documentary,” explains Harmon. “It’s your chance to figure out what’s wrong with me while cutting me in on the profit.”
After premiering in the Documentary Spotlight at SXSW, the film also screened at Hot Docs and the Los Angeles Film Festival. To promote the film, Harmon plans to embark on another podcast tour as “Harmontown” opens in markets around the country. Clever move.
