Here They Come To Save The Dayyyy....."Guardians of the Galaxy" Tries To Rescue Summer Box Office Season

THIS WEEK’S PREVIEWS AND PREDICTIONS

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY—BV/MARVEL—WIDE—121 MINS—PG-13—IMAX, 3D, D-BOX
From the moment the first teaser dropped, somehow uncovering and dusting off Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” out of the K-Tel vaults, Disney has looked like they’ve had a winner on their hands with “Guardians of the Galaxy”.  Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista and Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) are entrusted to save the universe against the dastardly villain Ronan, played by Lee Pace from TV’s “Halt and Catch Fire”.  Director James Gunn is indeed an odd choice to tackle a summer blockbuster as this is his first feature film and he made a name for himself mainly as a screenwriter (although he did direct episodes of the video series PG Porn, which brought us such memorable episodes as “Genital Hospital”, “High Poon” and the highly acclaimed small screen adaptation of the Shakespeare play,”Squeal Happy Whores”).  So to say that “Guardians” isn’t your typical Hollywood tentpole isn’t an understatement and you know, that’s just what might make it a success.  The film looks like a ton of fun (whoa, I know the concept of a FUN summer movie is difficult to fathom this year but hang with me) and should benefit from being in the Imax, 3D and D-Box formats. There have only been three movies that have ever opened north of $60 million in August (“Bourne Ultimatum” holds the record at $69 mil).  Get ready for a fourth.

JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $ 66 MILLION

DIRECTOR:  James Gunn

GET ON UP—UNIVERSAL—2,000-2,200 RUNS—138 MINS—PG-13
Universal’s third film in three weeks (oh I remember those days…and not fondly) is the long gestated biopic of legendary R&B/soul great James Brown, “Get On Up”.  “42” star Chadwick Boseman portrays the Godfather of Soul and the film is helmed by Tate Taylor, whose previous effort was 2011’s hit “The Help”.  Musical biopic success is very difficult to predict.  For every “Walk The Line” and “Ray” there’s “The Doors” and, dare I even utter the words, “Beyond The Sea”.  Boseman is supposedly terrific in the role and having the writer/director of “The Help” should also, ummm, help.

JIM’S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $ 13 MILLION
