Lena Waithe to Write BET Pilot Based on Her Webseries "Twenties"

Lena Waithe, the creator and writer of the YouTube series Twenties and the producer of the upcoming feature Dear White People (also based on her webseries), has landed a deal to pen a pilot for BET.

Waithe will adapt Twenties, which debuted online last August, for the cable channel. The webseries — and presumably the sitcom — will focus on a group of black women in their twenties attempting to navigate young adulthood and society at large. Waithe pointed to The Mary Tyler Moore Show and A Different World as influences, but there’s more than a small resemblance to HBO’s Girls as well.

"We want to be entertaining, but we also want to make people think and not just sit back mindlessly," Waithe commented. “We really want them to sit up and pay attention.”

Dear White People will open October 17. Though the Twenties series seems to have been pulled from YouTube, you can still find the pilot presentation on the site. The fourth and last installment (below), in which Hattie confesses how lost she feels, is the most promising.

Uhm, this proves that by-and-large people in their twenties don't really have anything to say that's worth hearing.
The girls prattling about "relationships" has got to cease.
