LeVar Burton’s ‘Reading Rainbow’ Kickstarter Campaign Lands In Platform’s All-Time Top 5

LeVar Burton's 'Reading Rainbow' Kickstarter Campaign Lands In Platform's All-Time Top 5

LeVar Burton’s much publicized Kickstarter campaign to
resurrect, as a web series, his old PBS children’s learning TV program, “Reading Rainbow,” has hit a milestone.

The original
goal of the campaign was to raise $1 million in 35 days (by July 2), which it did
in just one day. But, as of last week, the campaign
has raised some $6,408,916 million
from 105,857 backers, and that includes
a $1 million donation from “Family
Guy” and “Ted” creator Seth McFarlane.

The makes the
Rainbow campaign No. 4 on the all-time list of highest grossing Kickstarter campaigns, surpassing what was the previous 4th place record holder, the “Veronica Mars” film project (91,585 backers who contributed $5.7 million to make a film version of the TV show) – a completed movie that sort of came and went quickly with bad
reviews earlier this year. No doubt the “Reading Rainbow” project will be much
more successful.

Only Neil Young’s “Pono” with $6.2 million, the Ouya game console with $8.6
million, and the still top record holder, Pebble Watch with $10.2
million, have out-grossed the “Rainbow” campaign.

And if anyone
can tell me what those three are, I would be grateful.

What bad reviews for Veronica Mars? It had like 70% on rotten tomatoes, and they are already planning a sequel…

I think that's great for LeVar Burton because this is something that will benefit children and families negatively affected by the digital divide. However, I do find it interesting that kickstarter hasn't lived up to its original mission, which is, namely, to give unknown artists a means with which to raise capital that they otherwise might not have access to for their projects.

What does this say about the kickstarter model, or crowdfunding, in general, if the American public is unwilling to fund projects (specifically artistic one's) that do not have a name or celebrity fundraiser attached?

Congratulations to LeVar Burton for having a very successful Kickstarter campaign. I believe this project to re-introduce the world to Reading Rainbow will have a positive impact on the world!

As an objective observer who did not donate to the "Veronica Mars" Kickstarter and has never seen the show, I did not see a review more negative than "It doesn't break any new ground but fans will enjoy it." It DID sort of come and go, but probably because it was playing to the converted.

Ouya is an open-source gaming system; it's pretty cool. The Pebble is the watch that came out before the Samsung watch. I don't know what the other thing is.
