Marvel’s Thor Is Now a Woman: Discuss

Marvel's Thor Is Now a Woman: Discuss

“The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription,”  Marvel editor Wil Moss said today. “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

That’s right. Today Marvel announced that Thor is now a female character, at least in the comics.

“This is not She-Thor,” series writer Jason Aaron emphasized in the comics. “This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

This change will occur in October, when Marvel Comics will be introducing an all-new “Thor, God of Thunder” series.

“No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge will who will be worthy of the name Thor,” Marvel said in a  press release. “Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?”

The announcement was actually made by none other than Whoopi Goldberg on “The View” this morning.

“It’s a huge day in the Marvel Universe,” Goldberg said. “Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up, and he’s no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. For the first time in history, that hammer is being held by a woman. That’s right. Thor is a woman!”

Should Chris Hemsworth be concerned he’s about to be out of a job? We doubt it. But we’d love to know your thoughts on this switch in general…

Two words: Who Cares!

Jeff Smith

Meh. Give me a compelling story and decent art and I'll read it. Waste my time with your social agenda and I'm out.

I think Kat Dennings took all that 2 Broke Girls money and talked her way into development meetings at Marvel Comics. Complex storytelling is better storytelling, but there's a limit as the Lost writers found out. Chris Hemsworth is an excellent Thor but times change and the universe moves on without regard to your plans. I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds.

Because nothing says genuine female empowerment like robbing it from an existing male hero rather than achieving one's own.

Can we at least say she is the Goddess of Thunder? I mean, whoever shall hold the hammer…fine. But if it is a woman then she is a Goddess.
