One-Time-Only Chicago Screening Of Dominican Republic-Set Retelling Of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ – ‘Cristo Rey’ – 8/7

One-Time-Only Chicago Screening Of Dominican Republic-Set Retelling Of 'Romeo & Juliet' - 'Cristo Rey' - 8/7

There have been all sorts of retellings and re-imaginations
of Shakespeare’s immortal story of those two star-crossed lovers, such as the
equally immortal musical West Side
Story. But “Cristo Rey” might be the most intriguing version of “Romeo and Juliet” in quite a while.

Set in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, directed
by Leticia Tonos Paniagua, and starring James Saintil, Akari Endo, and Yasser
Michelén, the film is inspired and plays off the historical antagonisms and
hatred between Dominicans and Haitians.

In the film, the half brothers Janvier and Rudy, both from the same
island, but from 2 different worlds, confront each other for the love of the
same woman, Jocelyn, the younger sister of a local gang kingpin.

However, when Javier and Jocelyn fall madly in love, they
have to devise a plan to escape.

The film has not been screened much in North America, but luckily, Chicago area filmgoers will get their chance, when the film will be shown on Thursday August 7th, stating at 7PM, at the
Studio Movie grill Chatham 14 theatres, located at 210 W. 87th.

Admission is only $6. You can’t beat that.
