"Transformers" Overwhelms July 4th's Wide Openings As Weekend Plummets 44% Vs. Last Year

In a very depressed box office, “Transformers: Age Of Extinction” ruled the box office for the second consecutive weekend as it demolished its way to $53.8 million for the weekend, bringing its overall cume to $174 million.  The pic easily outdistanced Warners’ “Tammy”, which opened to $32.9 million for the five days.  Most articles one reads this morning are pressing the point that this is a disappointment and perhaps it is, based on tracking and expectations, but c’mon, it’s a cheap little movie with Melissa McCarthy that, despite its C+ Cinemascore, should end up eking out a profit.  The other openings for the stanza were middling, with “Deliver Us From Evil” (B+ Cinemascore) topping off at $15 million for the five days and “Earth To Echo” at $13.5 million.  The good news for Relativity is that there isn’t another family film until the 18th so it has some time, along with an impressive A- Cinemascore, to take advantage of rainy day matinees.

Elsewhere, Dinesh D’Souza’s “America” opened well for Lionsgate, tallying the $4 million that BOI predicted last Monday.  That’s less than the opening stanza for “Obama 2016” but still a tidy sum.  Also, Weinstein’s “Begin Again”, the music based rom/com with Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo pulled in $1.7 million on only 175 screens.  Finally, “Snowpiercer” added screens to get to the 250 level, which resulted in $1 million for the three days.

It’s difficult to even write this but here goes…year to year the weekend was down 44%.  Yes 44, not 4.
