'True Detective,' 'Breaking Bad,' 'The Normal Heart' Lead 2014 Emmy Nominations

After months away from awards, we’re feeling so much better. That wheezing cough has finally disappeared, our complexions are no longer grey, and that weird scaly rash has disappeared. Let’s hope it lasts: the movie awards season is fast approaching, but first up are the Emmys, the biggest celebration of TV in the calendar, which announced their nominations for the 2014 batch this morning.

We made our predictions a couple of days ago, but Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly just revealed the nominees, and… well, you can see for yourself below. The major nominees are down there, or click over to the Emmys site to find out some of the below the line ones like Best Cinematography for A Reality Show. Short story: same ol’ same ol’, with strong showings from "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad," "Game Of Thrones," "Modern Family," "The Big Bang Theory" et al. But some newcomers did especially well too, with "Fargo," "True Detective" and "Orange Is The New Black" all racking up multiple nominations. Full analysis is coming later in the day, and you can find out the winners when they’re announced on Monday, August 25th. And you can read our favorite TV shows of the season just gone right here.

Why is "Orange" competing in comedy? Comic moments, yes, some, but a comedy overall? No way.

Melissa

I did not care for The Normal Heart at all. Am I the only one?? I can't believe all those over-acted performances got nominations! There were some very good actors in this movie, but they were directed as caricatures, not characters, a la Ryan Murphy's annoying, over-the-top style. I appreciate the subject matter of The Normal Heart, but I thought it was an awful movie.

DG

How is Rian Johnson not nominated for best director for Breaking Bad? No offense to Gilligan but his episode this season is kind of messy compared to Johnson's. Also why is Kate McKinnon nominated for supportign actress for SNL when shes a regular featured player? I guess I'm just glad she's nominated since she's one of the only performers keeping the show alive still

House Lannister

Send a raven to the council at House Emmys. Game of Thrones should win every award for the goodness of the realm.

BEF

Love that Caplan got a nod … Really like the show but am confused by the Orange is the New Black guest actress nominations when they were/are regular characters on the show (except Cox).
Also goodness Normal Heart was an average movie.

That Kid

David Benioff & D.B. Weiss wrote for "Breaking Bad"? Those guys are good.

FYI in the UK, where we're less impressed with a posh, clipped British accent, Downtown Abbey is considered trash, Sunday night comfort viewing and The Good Wife is thought of as sharp, intelligent, well acted quality drama.

Josh

Oh come off it, where the hell is Dean Norris!?
