Watch: Chris Lilley Brings Back 'Jonah From Tonga' For HBO's 6 Episode 'Summer Heights High' Spin-Off

Last year Chris Lilley’s “Ja’mie: Private School Girl” captivated audiences with its riveting portrait of our formative years. Now, the Australian funnyman is bringing back another iconic character from his “Summer Heights High” days: Jonah, the rebellious breakdancer from the island country of Tonga.

Jonah From Tonga,” a six-episode series that will air on HBO August 8th, follows Jonah, who was expelled from Summer Heights High and sent back to Tonga after he returns to Sydney. The season will follow his adventures at the Holy Cross School.

Lilley’s “Summer Heights High,” which looked at three different characters at Summer Heights High School, was a surprise U.S. hit.

I cannot believe that this made it to production. If this were a Caucasian in black face there would have been such an uproar from the African American community you would never have considered the idea. Where in your wildest dreams did you think this was any different, to show such disrespect for the Tonga community? I am Caucasian and I have nothing but disgust for all those involved in this project. Shame on you.

Saw the series on the BBC. Astounding that anyone is still running a show where a middle-aged white guy puts on brown face paint and a curly wig and pretends to be a sexually aggressive, dumb, mildly criminal, all-singing, all-dancing brown guy. I thought the days of minstrel shows were over. And before anyone says 'hey, it's just comedy', ask a Tongan how funny they think it is. Or the Australian public. The show was a ratings disaster.
