Watch: Michael Shannon is a Bad, Bad Man in James Franco's Short Film 'Herbert White'

James Franco’s new short film,”Herbert White,” isn’t for the faint of heart. The short, which has been released by Vice, is based on Frank Bidart’s poem of the same name. It stars Michael Shannon as the world’s creepiest father and delves into the life and crimes of a murderer and necrophile.

Awaiting his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel “Child of God” to be released in cinemas this August, Franco thought it perfect time to share the film, which he made during his tenure at New York University. Franco, in a discussion with his “Sound of the Fury” and “As I Lay Dying” co-writer Matt Rager, said that he first came to hear of the poem in a class at one of his multiple MFA programs and was drawn to “the unusual depravity of the subject matter” and how the main character couldn’t “express himself or to contextualize his world.” Therefore, he tries to control it through violence.
