Watch: Mike Cahill Talks About Sound and Poetic Realism in 'I Origins'

Fox Searchlight has just released a short video featuring filmmaker Mike Cahill talking about Dolby’s support of "I Origins." In the clip, the director and writer talks about his interest in creating "Poetic Realism" — "so it feels very real, but there’s a touch of an artistic stroke to it" — and how "manipulation of the craft" was essential.

Cahill speaks of "removing things" and "isolating sounds," and how "all of that sonic stuff is motivated by the P.O.V of the character." His intentions were to let the sound grow with the film — "the intimacy remains, but the scope of the theme gets bigger and bigger and bigger." The sound extends "to envelope the audience."

Starring Michael Pitt, Brit Marling, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Steven Yeun and Archie Panjabi, "I Origins" opens on July 18th. In our review, Eric Kohn wrote, "Cahill generates an authentic sense of mystery by denying the possibility of fully understanding the secrets of the universe."
