Watch: New Trailer For WWII Survival Saga 'Unbroken' Directed By Angelina Jolie

"I wasn’t really looking for something of this size," Angelina Jolie told the LA Times earlier this year about taking on "Unbroken" for her sophomore directorial feature. "But the way Laura [Hillenbrand] writes about him is the way I like to read about people. It was like I was witnessing the birth of a man — it was something I wanted to tell my sons about."

And the "him" in question is Louis Zamperini, and his story is rather incredible. Co-scripted by the Coen Brothers, and based on a true story, this awards season drama tells the story of the former Olympian Zamperini  (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. You can practically see the light of Oscar reflecting off this thing. And Universal believe they’ve got a contender here too, starting the promo train for this all the way back during the Winter Olympics, and now dropping a new trailer months before release.

Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson, Garrett Hedlund, Finn Wittrock, John Magaro, Alex Russell and Miyavi, "Unbroken" opens on Christmas Day.

It looks impressive. Jack O'Connell has come a long way from James Cook.

I read the book a year ago, and I can say, his life was incredible, one of the most touching histories I've ever read, I just hope Angelina can bring to the film the same emotion that the book does, the book is amazing, he was amazing…

I'm crazy curious to hear more of Jack O'Connell's American accent. If he manages to sound natural — that's worth the Oscar right there.

Mr Zamperini's life is what great cinema or as some write Oscar bait is all about.
